Animation quality

When choosing clips to edit from, how particular are you about the animtion quality in the clip you are looking at? How important do you think it is to be picky for just the best animation in a series?

The reason why I ask is because some show's animation is not exactly the most consistant, especially for the series from the '80s. And with my video, I've noticed that some of the clips have the type of action I need, but their official animation has kind of subpar quality compared to the other scenes I'll be using.

How important is choosing the quality of animation do you think? Or do you think the action from the scene is more important than the animation style?

Using the right editing techniques you can completely hide the shittiness of the original animation.

There are lots of series I like that I wouldn't make an AMV out of, either due to poor animation quality, lack of footage (movies/OVAs), or extreme overuse of the series. I don't think it's worth fighting bad quality footage on top of everything else.

So yeah, if a series had better footage in one place, I'd definitely be using that over the other spots.

Never been a factor to me in this way. If anything though, it certainly works the other way with good animation being a 'turn on' when it comes to wanting to make a video to it.

Otherwise I've seen amazing videos done with poor animation. I want to see more of these.

Doesn't really bother me (Though I haven't edited 80's anime). Though it'd be some good stuff for a comedy maybe =P

I started making a video to Grave of the Fireflies, then stopped after maybe 20 minutes because I hated the animation so much.

It really depends on your source. No such thing as specifics when there's hundreds of ways for animation to be crappy

One thing I find that often helps compensate for cheap, highly static animation is effective use of motion and masking. I don't suggest sticking filters/effects over the top of footage for no reason other than the fact it's old since they can actually make it look a lot worse. In general, it's better to compensate for bad footage with good editing on a basic timing level than by trying to change the look of it yourself.
