Do you guys draw storyboards?

Post by meleechampion » Thu May 10, 2007 9:39 pm

I'm having trouble catching all of the ideas flowing around in my head and holding on to them long enough to throw them down on the timeline in the form of anime clips. Do you guys have a layout that you draw out first and then make your AMV or is that an unheard of idea in such an artistic endeavor?

Oh, I know people do it, but I never have myself. If I got an idea that I just feel is great, but for some reason I might forget it, I suppose I'd write it down...but if it was good enough, I imagine I wouldn't forget it in the first place :P

I don't mean AMV ideas, I have a section of my whiteboard devoted to remembering those. I mean scene selection within an AMV. I guess with my first AMV it was strictly lyrical sync so I remembered what I wanted to go where, my second AMV followed the story of the anime itself, but this new one I'm working on is a little "all over the place" if you will. I'm considering writing it all down.

Some people like to scope out and hunt down scenes they know they are going to use. I pretty sure some might follow the method of writing out what goes where or who does what. I for one just make the video as i see it. No particular method. If I find a clip that conveys what I want to show, I'll put it in.

Ah, I see. When I make videos I usually just go with the flow of the song...for almost every video I have at least one part where I know EXACTLY what scenes I want, the exact effects, timing, everything. But for the most part I listen to the song, and then go searching through my clips and put in whatever I feel fits best. Sometimes I know what kind of scene I'm looking for, it's just a matter of actually finding it...sometimes I have no idea what I'm looking for, and I have to look through clip after clip and ask myself if that would go well with the music.

Lots of trial-and-error, basically, and almost no pre-planning.

For me, it completely depends on the video. Sometimes, scenes will just fall into place as I start editing, and I basically just wing it all the way through. But, most of the time, it takes more planning, and I'll actually map out the type of scenes that I want to use for particular parts of the song. I also have a hard time remembering all my ideas after they hit me, so I usually keep a notepad or something next to me so I can jot things down as I think of them.

So yeah...I like to plan stuff out. Things don't always work out in the way I plan them out to be, but it generally tends to help me stay on track.

Actually draw? - no. I can't draw =( But text files with time markers and comments sometimes help.

I drew a crappy-looking storyboard for my End of the World video once when I was particularly bored. I didn't get much farther than what I'd already edited though. :|

I cant do that. I just try to add scenes that flow with the song. and if i dont think it flows good enough, then i try a different scene.

It might be an idiotic way to do it, but I've only just started out, so i'm at the phase right now where i just experiment and try different things.
