What's your favorite "CRAPPY DUBBED" anime series?

Post by angelx03 » Sat Aug 16, 2003 2:23 pm

You could include that shows on network TV. Please don't answer the question with NONE or any other forms of it (in other words, NO FLAMING  ). There has to be SOME decency with the dubbing.

For me I liked the 3rd season of Digimon.

I like dubs in general. Even when they're bad, I enjoy the bad acting. What can I say, I don't know a blessed word of Japanese beyond the usual handful of phrases, and I don't care about "purity;" it's a freaking television show. So subs are nice and all, but I don't have a fetish for them like most anime fiends do.

Anyway, I am proudly a dub whore. 8)

And for pure camp value, no anime I've seen beats the voice-acting in the PSX game Star Ocean: The Second Story. Whoo boy. When one of your characters' battle cries can only be written as "Hee-YAAAH," you definitely have a problem.

"I will turn you into a beehive!"
"Here comes Mr. Enemyyyyy!"
"Crawd has advanced forward, heh!"

...yeah, that has to be my favorite.

Well i think Tenchi Muyo that was showen on Cartoon Network was terribly dubbed. The man (voice actor for Tenchi) had no emotions in his voice at all! And if its an OVA it has to be Samurai X. Just compare it to the Japanese voices at the bit when Tomoe meets Kenshin. Q.E.D.
However sometimes the Japanese language does not convey the humor in an anime. Examples: Asuka speaking german in Evangeleon is much funnier with the english voice actress, and pedro's voice actor in Excel saga is likewise funnier in english

I happen to be a big fan of dubs as well as subs, but if the acting is painful on either side, I won't watch it. I'm also not big on "purity", either, because I've seen where fansubbers take major liberties with the translation anyway. Not to mention that at least to me, dubs (especially comedies) tend to have much better dialogue. For some reason subbed comedy is just too bland for me :?

As for some of my favorites, Shinesman is my top favorite comedy dub, followed closely by Sorcerer Hunters. In both cases, the dub script is phenominally funny.

My favorite dub drama would have to be Perfect Blue. Mima's voice is slightly irritating at first, but I got used to it. Second runner-up for me is Gundam Wing. Bitch all you want, I actually liked the show. And I prefer the dub to the original. The acting was a lot more dynamic (if it's one pet peeve I have about subs, it's that Japanese voice acting tends to be bland for the most part. And unless I can see the character speaking, I have a hard time distinguishing who's talking because the voices sound too much alike), and the translations weren't THAT bad, at least in the uncut-at-midnight version on CN.

There's my $.02

Yeah, I'd say Gundam Wing is the only anime where I'm perfectly content to watch it in English. I mean, I like the original voice actors, but if I'm going to watch the entire series, I'll watch it in English. I just like the different accents (though I notice Trowa's dub voice sounds a *lot* like his Japanese voice when you get down to it, cool). And the translations *were* very close. For most others I prefer the Japanese for the translation and acting, but GW has a nice cast for the dubbed. No complaints from me where that anime is concerned. ^_^

i usually prefer dubs...but Excel saga has THE worst dub ive ever heard and alot of others have too. I mean, i cant even stand watching it at all. Its not just BAD, its horrid. Its so bad its not even amusing to listen to their shitty job of dubbing --; But the shows great...waht a waste. I hate ADV --; They ruin all the anime they get...well most of it. Rah's dub is...mediocre at best, and Noir is fair. Nothing great. Get something from tokyopop, bandai, pioneer, etc it'll be great most likely --; ADV sucks --;

You want crappy dubs, how about the all famous "Clash Of The Bionoids"
The dubbed version of Macross: Do You Remember Love?

In my opinion of dubs though, I think that when ADV does dub Azumanga Daioh, it will be pretty bad, especially with Osaka, I don't think that any american voice actress will match the all out spacy attitude she projects.
"I've spent the last ten years of my life defending my country, I've sacrificed for it, fought for it, and bled for it, now it's time I got something back, so please just respect me and my fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines as we continue to do this job."
