18+???? Evangelion came out in 1995!!
And I have to say that many people are only now seeing it. I saw it for the first time last year. I can see it wearing on people who have had the same discussions so many times, but remember the first time you saw it?! Remember the first time you sat down and talked about it with someone... This is what is happening to these people right now.

Both of them were released in 1994-1995 in Japan (came out here in 1999-2000).

Actually, 「レイ」 as written in Evangelion doesn't define anything in particular by itself, in カタカナ[katakana] form. It's the 漢字[kanji] that can give initial definition to the word.SS5_Majin_Bebi wrote:Well the word "Rei" is actually japanese for the number "zero". As for Kaworu, I'm not sure. But his last name (Nagisa) apparently means "(of the) Seashore".hanyou21 wrote:ya, Rei stands for hope and Kaworu for the words "i love u", right?
In my interpretation, Rei is the "representative" of humans, and Kaworu is the "representative" of the Angels. Kaworu seems to recognise this, because he says to Rei "You and I are the same." but Rei is still confused about Kaworu until he takes command of Unit 02.
Oh and also, Kaworu's "real" name, his Angel name, is Taberis, and he is the angel of Alternatives - in other words, he represents choice.
But I'm sure, as MajinBebi described, レイ is open for interpreation, or can symbolize a concept that can relate to the name anyways. Same goes for カヲル[Kaworu].

No. She has no maternal feelings toward Shinji and she's not a Yui clone. She loves Shinji in a very non-maternal way. I have screencaps to prove it.rucka wrote:Speaking of Rei, have you ever wondered why she loved Shinji as a mother? I know she's a half Yui clone...

What evidence do you have to say that she is not made of Yui's genetic material? It is a circumstantial case that says that she is, but it is pretty compelling.the Black Monarch wrote:No. She has no maternal feelings toward Shinji and she's not a Yui clone. Rei never put the moves on Shinji except in those psycho id driven mental spaces. Since there is a lot of Freud and Jung being slung around by Anno, the theme of loving your mother and wanting to find someone just like mom is a central theme of theirs and obviously shown in this series. Revolting? Yes. But the allusions to Rei being like his mom are not coincidental.

-different eye colorWhat evidence do you have to say that she is not made of Yui's genetic material?
-different hair color
-Age (Rei was 4 when Yui died, if you discount what is most likely an animation error)
-Lack of any greater physical resemblance between the two than between most other random pairs of two major characters (not counting hair style)
Well, there was that scene in Episode 5 that I could go into a detailed explanation of... you know, the one in Rei's apartment where she waits like 5 minutes before asking Shinji if he plans to get off her, pauses for like three seconds before getting up, then pauses again before turning around and getting dressed. There's also the fact that he's the only person she's ever expressed gratitude to. There's also that quote from Episode 23, something about wanting to be one with Shinji... Or I could just post this.Rei never put the moves on Shinji except in those psycho id driven mental spaces

That seems like one hell of a move to put on someone, and the Oedipus complex rarely works in reverse.
That, like so much else in Eva, is speculation. Besides, Freud was a psychotic coke addict whose theories have no basis in anything other than his own crack-induced ramblings.there is a lot of Freud and Jung being slung around by Anno
Huh? Explain.the theme of... wanting to find someone just like mom is... obviously shown in this series
