Replace the "V" with a "B" and you get DBZ

probably what you were initially going for... i hope

i agree with VegettoEX's comments on the series, DB looks fun and hilarious at times even, DBZ is the fighting in DB made into a series, but also i think it helps in it's own way
DB-tribute to the Monkey-King tale
DBZ-explain why Goku is so friggin strong, he was an alien of course, for the rest of the series, create an atmosphere where you could believe saiyans and namekians can actually exist because of the extensive history they have.. well saiyans anyway
DBGT-... sad attempt to attract fans with a goku that resembles the one in DB, but i think that's what DBZ was going for with Goten anyways, but the series does get better at the end, guess the climax has to be good or else the series is a complete failure, but i don't think GT had much purpose to make a trilogy out of it.

i think the fact that the enemies are stronger than the guys at first is 1st of all in tons of other things, kung fu movies come to mind, since DBZ is really supposed to be a martial arts anime in a way anyway, and 2nd isn't totally outlandish when you think about it.

3 villans
1st-frieza, tyrant king who ruled because of his power, so he is of course already powerful, but the saiyans had to be avenged, so goku became stronger (ssj) to beat him
2nd-cell, who would be more powerful than frieza, well goku for one since he was the one that beat him, so we get a villan that is made FROM goku and other people to make him automatically more stronger and we get the whole history biting you in the butt with RR army
3rd-buu, we don't really get any strong person, we get hate/evil itself, so yes it has to be powerful, and goku didn't become more powerful than buu, it was the power of good within the spirit bomb that beat the evilness that is buu

seeing things that way, the villans don't bother me much, i see them as natural to fight against... but then again, this is seeing it from the eyes of a person who likes the anime.
otherwise i'd say 'ooooh, you are more powerful, so i'll have to do sumtin drastic! aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!! [explosion] now let's see how tough you are!'

Exception to the fighting series rule of "bigger bad guy" would have to be One Piece (yes! The Shameless Plugger strikes again!)

The bad guys do get bigger and more powerful, but what keeps it from going stale is that the stories surrounding each new character are that damn cool. The series focuses plenty on fun and comedic ass-kicking, but there's a great dramatic side to it. The whole value of friendship and ultimate freedom and all that good stuff.

I agree with VegettoEX, though. The best arcs in DBZ were the ones that centered on story rather than who wants to kick Goku's nonexistent tail. My personal favorites were the time-travel ones: Future Trunks, Android, Cell, etc. And most of the movies/specials were good, too. Almost makes me want to drag out my Trunks-and-Bardock-Specials fansub...if I had a working VCR >.<

I guess another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of stuff later in the series is mostly just pay-off for the long-time fans. I mean, even in the Cell Saga... people who are just getting into the series with DBZ will have no idea what the Red Ribbon Army is, and why that's so mind-blowing that...

Uhh... spoilers?

... not only did one of them remain (albeit a no-name scientist), but they've been WATCHING and collecting data the ENTIRE time that the series has been going on. It's almost creepy ^^;;

A lot of fans look at the Buu saga as an almost different series, as it takes things in a new direction. Quite frankly, it's what GT tried to do, but failed at. It introduced a new child Goku-like character (Goten), focused A LOT on "having fun" (all forms of Buu), and was really just "bigger, faster, stronger, MORE!"

I totally agree with the One Piece sentiments. It really is a worthy sucessor to DragonBall. When you look at it very simply, OP doesn't look a lot like DBZ... but when you look at the long, incredibly well-written story arcs, the value of friendship, emphasis on exploration, tragic heroes... it really is a lot like DB, and easy to see why it has enjoyed the same level of success that DB had in Japan :D.

One Piece appears in Shonen Jump, that's where i'd read it, and i'm sure it's not very far in the series since the magazine is only a year old in the US, but i enjoy One Piece a lot, it's funny, and yeah, i like the feeling of ultimate freedom that it has with it.

Sadly, i haven't read or seen all of DB, but from what i've seen, it looks very enjoyable all the way to the end

btw, does anyone else think that the www.dragonballz.com website sux, i mean it's supposed to be the official site of dbz, but it's just so lacking imo

heh heh  very true, hadn't thought of it like that, i'm not one for browsing the net, so i usually don't see many official sites of ANYTHING, but seriously, I could do a better site than that... except for the providing of crappy merchandise, but the information on the series and characters would be about 20X better, depending on what music i'm listening to.. probably sumtin by Apocalyptica or Danny Elfman... wat?!

......................................NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
DBZ is cooler than DB! Although DB was really cute. I personally thought that the best sagas were Saiyan, Cell, Fusion, and all the Boo sagas. I didn't really like the android saga all that much, the Freiza saga was ok. The Boo saga was hilarious, if you watch it uncut, that is. They cut out the funniest thing for the tv version, and it was just a fart joke! Super Boo has too use the bathroom, so he turns a rock into a porta-potty. Now Mr.Satan(hercule, ugly!!) and Dende are following Boo, Satan goes to sneak up on boo whose in the bathroomk, and all of a suden boo lets a huuuuuuuuuuge fart out, causing Satan and Dende to faint. Also, they cut out the part when goten had too go pee, so trunks joins him and in the english version they start spelling trunks with their pee, in japanese they try to see how far it goes, in dragon ball u see chibi gokus -ahem- all the time.......MY EYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, dont judge a show by the cut version, i once hated dbz and it is now one of my faves. Do not diss the (attractive and hot)prince either!
