I think I said category nominations would be closing tonight. Let's be specific. I'm closing the site at 2012-09-19 00:00 UTC which is 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time (the official time zone of our host, Anime Weekend Atlanta).
When the voting site goes live, it will remain live until 2012-09-26 00:00 UTC which is 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time one week later.

aaah, on the voting page it says 1012-09-18 00:00 UTC.

on the page:

"Category nominations end at 12:00 UTC on Monday, September 17, 2012."

I say that they have an exclusive rule next year just to see how it goes, whether it hurts the contest or not. Put up a poll or something to see how many are for it.

My two cents, regarding the rules or not:

The fact is some people made new videos for this year and I believe they worked hard on them. I think having a category of Best New Video, is a way to award those that tried and made a new video. To be honest I had no idea about the new video thingy. That doesn't mean we shouldn't reward those that did a new video. I had my votes for that category, some really nice new videos, and to be honest I'm a bit sad to see that category go away...
The only ones I have no idea if they are new or not, are the live action ones. But for me they are new, so.

For the future, maybe if when you submit a video you get a little checkbox saying if that's new or not. And then of course, have the Best New Video category. It would also be a way to filter the new videos. You could also have a "new rule" like, "you're only allowed to submit an old video".

I just think that for this year, the category should stay so that those that did in fact a new video just for AWA get rewarded.

It'd be nice, but with all the logistics involved to make it happen and with the con just over a week away there's no way it can happen. I for one don't want to make Jingoro want to lost what remains of his sanity after having to rush to cope with the passing of Quu. That in and of itself had to be a nightmare to cope with. Personally, as much as I like to bitch about stuff here on the forums, I in no way want to dump more problems on Jingoro, Vlad or any other staffer for awa. Hence the reason why I'm making suggestions for next year instead. It's way too late in the game to do anything for this year.

My two cents on the exclusive thing: AWA Pro has never been strictly exclusive since I first entered (2004). It was just recommended to submit exclusive videos, and personally I think that's enough. It'll be never entirely possible to control such a rule anyway.

What I just did, and would recommend everyone else to do, is not to nominate or vote for a video in the "Best Video" or Best of Show category which is not exclusive, no matter how much I like it.

As for Akross, it's just an online contest. I would always prefer to make something for a contest whose winners are premiered live in front of an actual audience.

You know, I was just chatting with Glory Questor on IRC and I asked him if he had any idea which videos are mine. This has always been a whole ton of fun with all of us guessing who made what video. That's why next year for 2013, in addition to my video review I will also attempt to guess who made the video. And if they still allow videos that have premiered into the contest I won't look em up beforehand so it'd be an honest guess.

if i was attending the convention, then i'd consider that. however entering Akross gives more exposure in my opinion. or at least exposure to those who will go and download your work. but again, notable disclaimer of "that's just me" XD

tangent, sorry :P
