Journey of the Heart

Post by Seebo » Tue Mar 25, 2008 8:41 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm not a new creator, as I made 2-3 videos about 5 years ago, but they really sucked, and haven't really tried my hand at it again till now. I just finished a new amv, and would love to get some feedback from some of you more seasoned creators.

One last thing, the vid is a little over 6 minutes long, so please bear with it. I know, a sentimental video probably shouldn't be that long, but I didn't want to edit down the song since I felt it fit so perfectly with the movies.

Thanks for watching!

I must say I really dig this song , as for the amv flow was outstanding. I did'nt like the square borders at 04:02 to 04:45 good use of fades too.

Other than it had nice concept , awesome flow as well

Ok. I LOVE the way you arranged this AMV. Having VoaDS to the first verse, 5CPS to the second, and BtC to the third worked really well and I thought it worked much better than it ever could have if you'd mixed them all up. You kept a conceptual consistency and the video was very easy to follow thanks to this. It also worked well mixing the animes together at the beginning and end of the video, so that there was some continuity and it wasn't like you were trying to fit three different videos into one.

In short, you did a fantastic job at seamlessly merging the three animes together.

However, the border thing you did when the song picked up was nothing short of awful, terrible, blasphemous. It utterly ruined the mood and atmosphere you'd so meticulously crafted up to that point. I can't imagine what would make you think that looked good there, or anywhere in the video, because it just didn't. It divided my attention, it just completely took away any impact the climax of the video could have had. It was so frutrating to watch, because I was really, REALLY into the video at that point - and it totally let me down.

I'm also kinda torn on the black-and-white/pause effect thing you did a few times. Once or twice it didn't look so bad, but it really just didn't seem like it fit in the video. Did you watch Pwolf's 5CPS/BtC video and want to try something like what he did without obviously ripping it off, or something? That's the feeling I got from it.

So basically, this video had a TON of potential to be awesome and somewhat unique (first video I've seen that uses all three Shinkai works, at least exclusively), but the climax just killed it. It has such good scene selection, atmosphere, sync...even after the border thing, the video kind of redeems itself with some really well-placed scenes, but I don't know that they're enough to erase what the borders do to the video.

3/5

But without the borders, it would've been an easy 5/5.

P.S. - Sources look a little too smoothed. Watch the deen() filter in future videos.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I really appreciate it.

As for the borders thing, I felt like the the video had been dragging on for so long that it needed something to pump up the energy of the video, since the energy of the song was finally getting up there, but I guess it didn't do what I wanted =P

I might rethink that part, see what I can do differently.

Again, thanks for the feedback!

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to answer CrackTheSky's question.

I hadn't seen Pwolf's video, but I have since dl'd it, and see what you mean. I didn't try to copy him, but now that I've seen it I kind of wish I had =P He did it the right way, sadly my way doesn't really have to same impact. But that just shows that I'm still new, still learning. I'll take this all with me when I start making my next video, or who knows, I might remaster this one some time down the road.

Hmm, I second what CrackTheSky said O:

The mood sync was really nicely flowing and focused  But the climax killed it. You could have just simply done it with a more dramatic clip selection and faster sync. I usually don't suggest people to remake parts of their videos but this one could have use for some remaking. The climax was just.. It's like you watch a movie that builds up tension but never breaks through it X_X

Dug the still frames though
