Galvanize!

Post by lamrith » Fri Jan 10, 2020 8:32 am

I am branching out and watching other anime, but I do not have the diversity or knowledge of any of them yet so I went back to my favorite for this one. Plus season 4 finally launches this weekend!

I was working on a different AMV when I heard this song on an AMV by Seasons just before Christmas and it screamed to be paired with Haikyuu! In fact it felt so made for season 3 that I stopped working on the other one and dove into this one.

NEW LINK, fixed Techincal issues due to resampling:

Interesting AMV. I haven't watched this anime so some of your intent may be lost on me. I felt for a song like this you could have focused on syncing it more tightly to the beats in the song. There were parts where internal sync was fairly apparent, like 1:09 through 1:11, but overall I felt it could have emphasized the beats more. It was also mostly scenes of them playing. I think if you intertwined some drama scenes in between the action it would make the video more personable. These are just my thoughts. Other will have different opinion. Perhaps this is more like a motivational and montage sort of video, then it works more. Good work overall.

For me, this was much more of an "I see what you were going for"-kind of AMV than one that really nails the concept with kind of intensity that the material seems to be calling for.

There are some moments of great sync in this, it feels like you hit your stride in the second half (2:46 is such a perfect moment, really caught me off guard).

Many of the most kinetic shots have a blurry, ghosting-like feel to them that makes the video feel sloppy and undercuts the work you put into it to make it look great. I think in Sony Vegas you have to "disable resampling" or something like that? I really don't know if that's the problem here or not, I'm just mentioning it because you mentioned that's what you edit with and sometimes that's the key to correcting the issue (or a similar problem, idk).

I enjoyed this overall. The only other video of yours that I've watched was the Van Halen one and this is miles better. There's some pretty excellent internal sync and lip sync throughout, and I also thought the visual rhythm of the video felt right on.

There were a few issues, though -- first, the scene selection got really repetitive after a minute or so. Not that you really had to do anything mindblowing or terribly deep, but some sort of character development or focus to the video would have been welcome. It just kind of felt like the same bump-set-spike montage that most Haikyuu!! videos tend to be. Also, seasons mentioned it but if you're using Vegas, make sure you set the resample mode to "Disable Resample" in your project properties. If you're using an older version of Vegas, you have to do this individually for each clip. Failing to do so creates a "ghosting" effect on any clips that you change the speed of. Also, I really hope you start to work outside of Haikyuu!! because I think you're limiting yourself. You're getting better with editing so I'm interested to see what you can do with other sources. Don't feel like you have to know an anime inside and out to edit with it -- just jump in and see what you can come up with.

But yeah, this video is a step in the right direction, looking forward to where you go from here!

I really very much appreciate all your input!

After hearing 3 of you make similar comments I went back and looked the video over again. Sure enough I did NOT have resampling disabled. Doing that really changed the video and threw timing off quite a bit. I normally render my videos and watch the output on my bigscreen as a way to look for phantoms and timing issues, but it seems that is not quote working as this is not the 1st time I have gotten feedback about not being synched though they are on my PC and TV. Hopefully this resamlping change will make it so I see what all of you are seeing (or not seeing)!

With that in Mind I went back, forced resample disable on the project and then went thru and fixed timing on quite a few scenes. I specifically went about it to only fix technical and timing errors from resampling, not change the content.

The Youtube link above and dB entry have both been updated to the new corrected video.

Let me know what you think and if it fixes some of the technical and timing issues!!

I have done a couple SAO videos as well, go check out my channel or other posts here, I would like to hear your input on them as well!
I recently finished watching Yona and Shield Hero, so may do something with them as well. I have a Initial D one I have been thinking of doing, but there are already sooo many out there. I will consider other anime I do not "know" for sure, I just have found it hard to use an anime when I do not know anything about it. I have not been able to know where to go for scenes I am looking to put to music if that makes sense.
