Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
- Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
- Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
- When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
- Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

People used to laughed at, shunned, imprisoned, or even worse for saying that the world was round, for thinking that the Earth revolved around the sun, for saying "I'm not content with the current line of thinking, I want to explore other possiblities" and then trying to share that with others. I see things haven't changed much.

Sense of perspective? What's that? These are CARTOONS AND MUSIC WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE! THAT'S LIFE AND DEATH! People are BEING IMPRISONED FOR -
wait, people are disagreeing with them on internet message boards? That's JUST like being thrown in prison!!!
Anyway, my point stands, and I do find it amusing that the retracting just reiterated it - "Now that all those common people can do it, it's not special anymore."
I'm sorry you don't like AMVs anymore, Mr. Milberry. Fun while it lasted, I hope.

I have ADSL so uploading is a pain and if I have P2P software downloading stuff it's hopeless, so it will take me a little while. I'm trying to decide if I want to go through the pain of trying to re-encode some things before I upload them (to re-encode I need to dig out the masters, write an AVS script to tack the title screen on and resize, then encoding it a number of times until I find just the right settings ....)
I'll try to get the rest up sometime soon though and make a post once I do.
Out of curiosity, what tends to be the preferred format? I alwaysed used to just use MPEG1 but lately I've been happy with divx compatible Xvid ...

SaratheBoring - go away. I'm not nit picking words or dealing with you anymore ... just shew. If you want to talk about AMVs or what OK, but if you're going to be sarcastic and continually, completely, mis-interpret what someone says find some other thread.
I gave you a chance when I asked to meet you and say hi at Tekkoshocon and you basically said that we were on different levels and thus couldn't speak because of that ... so don't speak to me now.
Unless you want to talk about anime related items or be friendly, this is the last time I am going ever reply to you.

Universal compatibility was my reason for using MPEG1 for the lonstest time, but I just can't tease the quality out of it that I can with 2-pass xvid.Corran Productions wrote:I prefer Xvid 2-pass with the divx fourcc myself. I like to make an mpeg version also though and host that on my own site for people with slow computers and people that can't/won't install divx...
The copy of my video "Adolescence" which I just uploaded to the ORG is a sexy looking Xvid. Unfortunatly I can't host dual formats right now so I'll need to decide on one or the other for each video ...

Not everyone has XviD per se. Most people have DivX5 or ffdshow, both of which have various rendering bugs with XviD output. (XviD itself actually generates MPEG-4 compliant video streams, but not everything can decode that data reliably.)Beowulf wrote:Then do Xvid. There are enough popular videos in Xvid format to the point where EVERYONE has it.
Just look at Euphoria
It can be tricky to get XviD encoding parameters just right so that (1) it looks good but (2) maintains compatibility with older software out there.
There's also the problem of the CPU power required to decode XviD video. That is, it's much higher. I have been able to play MPEG-1s on just about any platform that supports even basic video playback. On the other hand, I've been able to choke a P4 @ 1.7 GHz playing back a 704x480 XviD file. It wasn't an encoding error; rather, it was because
(1) XviD decoding is more processor-intensive
(2) the P4 was busy with other tasks
(3) the P4 architecture sucks
Most people are sensible about this kind of stuff and don't distribute in 480p, but XviD can still take a sizable amount of CPU time to decode smaller files. I've also noticed that most people do not watch AMVs without doing something else on their computer, which eats into the available time even more. So software ubiquity isn't the only factor.
Personally, I'd say just do DivX-compatible XviD.
Of course, I also advocate muxing XviD streams marked as XviD into Matroska containers with Vorbis audio streams, so I may not have the most valid opinion when it comes to maintaining compatibility.
