  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

THIS has been discussed thousands times on the forums and on the mailing list, and noone ever won this fight with any proof.
I'm still waiting for the dictionary where you found that...
If you scan it and put it here...it's OK. But, to my knowledge, nowhere it's been written by someone with a right to decide that anime was only for japanese animation.

Moreover, it depends on the country, and this site is international...so...
In the US and Europe (at least France), Anime might mean japanese animation because of the pronunciation (the "e" is pronounced "é" so it sounds japanese)...
I think it's the only reason, and it doesn't have any weight...
And as it has already been said, in Japan I think "anime" is ok for any kind of animated stuff

Moreover, what is "japanese" animation ? Does it mean that the director is japanese ? That the characters have big eyes ? that all people who made the anime have a yellow skin ?
There are many corean cartoons too, that look like japanese animation, would you ban them ? And what about japanese Anime where only the director is japanese and all other people are coreans ?
What if one day an american cartoon looks like your favorite japanese anime , and that all the drawers are japanese, but the director is American....
Oh, wait, what about Animatrix ???
etc, etc...

We should stop this discussion about what is anime or not, it won't go anywhere.

My opinion is still that US cartoons should be (and in fact, ARE) allowed on the donut. And all other thing that is not live action.

They are? I thought the reason the donut was limited to japanese animation (and japanese-made video footage) was because of Japanese copyrights being less stringent than American ones - so the org is in less danger if the footage used and hosted is Japanese in origin. I had no idea American animation was allowed (is this mentioned in the 'what you can upload' section? I didn't see any reference to American animation - he might want to add that to clear up this sort of argument.)

The full Golden Donut storage server is now available. This means you may upload the following:

Anime music videos
Anime-styled game cut scene videos (like Final Fantasy)

There's no need to be hateful about it.

I go by my definition of anime, and Phade goes by his. If he took the time to define 'remastering' for those who might be confused, I see no reason he can't define what he means by 'anime' for those who may also be confused. Until he does so, his definition could be the same as mine, or it could be the same as yours - I and everyone else on this site have no way of knowing unless he's made some sort of declaration that I missed.

[And I did read your post, and I wasn't arguing with you about your post. I was explaining my misunderstanding. But feel free to scream at me more, I don't really care all that much.]

Why would you need a dictionary to define something that has been clearly defined by fans for years?

In English, the word anime is used to specify animation that is either animated by japanese artists or animated for the japanese market (such as anime produced by japanese companies but animated by korean workers). If you want a definition then I recall it being printed in Clements and McCarthy's anime encyclopedia - but I could be mistaken. Most dictionary definitions fall short because of stereotypes (japanese animation containing sex and/or violence)

Also, just because the word chosen to have this semantic meaning does not purely mean "japanese animation" in its country of origin does not detract from its usage in the west. It's a loan word and when a word is inherited into a language it is often given a slightly different meaning than its source. (e.g. we loaned the word mouton from the french with our word mutton but in English this only means the meat of the sheep, whereas in French it means the meat or the sheep itself IIRC)

Sorry to disagree with you Willow, but the term anime as used in the west refers to japanese animation. That's its semantic function in English. In Japanese its different and some people may not consider a defiition based on this strict interpretation but that is how it has been defined by western fans of japanese animation for over twenty years.

I do think this could be cleared up rather easily if Phade were more direct than this:
Phade wrote:If you have the ability to distinguish between "anime" and "cartoon", you know what can be uploaded and what can't. If you can't distinguish between "anime" and "cartoon", please ask before you upload.
Source:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... ight=anime

 I could take that to mean - "If it's anime by your definition, then it's fine. If you don't have a definition, ask and you can use someone else's."

A simple - "Anime = this" or "Anime /= this" would settle any and all arguments over the subject since not everyone here goes by the western definition of the word.

Then you'll never see my "Corto Maltese" amv (french-Canadian animation) that I was planning to do.

I'll keep it for myself !
Muwaahahahahahahahah

Oh, wait, you don't care

And I still think it's sad to make such a reject of cartoon music videos... but well, ok, I think it's ok to add them in the database, but not on the donut, then.
(Road To iron chef is not anime, then... and "The vat is broken" neither ? and Failed experiments contains more original graphics than anime...yet it's cool to have these videos on the org...so where is the distinction here ?)
