AJJ - Free Bird (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

Post by Toji1996 » Fri Aug 13, 2021 9:48 pm

Hi everyone, this is my first AMV after a couple years away. It is the first in a three-part series; the rest is currently in progress.

Enjoy! And of course, I'm open to feedback.

I'm a sucker for Evangelion videos with no Evangelions, that give all the screen time to the characters and settings and exploring the subtler emotions present in the series. This is a very good video, the pacing is absolutely wonderful. Even though there's nothing particularly bombastic or that really stands out at all in the editing here in the way that more technical videos might, that's actually a strength -- you don't notice the cuts because they feel so naturally placed that it gives your slow, contemplative concept a fluidity and the room to breathe that it needs. Really great job here!

Really interesting and engaging pacing, it never feels too slow or too rushed, every sequence just rolls and never gets repetitious but always feels logical and natural. The editing has a cadence to it that's never predictable, both the cuts and the internal sync (or lack thereof) play off the music in really interesting ways. The way you balance static shots with heavily-animated clips or simple tracking shots isn't going to hook a ton of viewers right off the bat but I think any viewer who's invested in Evangelion or appreciates its quieter moments will find this AMV will find themselves engrossed in this if they really give it a chance.
