The Beat Will Continue Until Morale Improves -- Otakon2015

Post by dragontamer5788 » Sun Jul 26, 2015 10:16 pm

This "Upbeat" submission to Otakon2015 won "Best in Show"

I'd like to thank VicBond007 for putting on a wonderful contest once again. Organizing and running the whole thing, as well as choosing great audio / video equipment to show off the stuff. It was nice being able to hear all of the instruments of this beautiful song "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray in the big "Video 1" at Otakon.

If anyone has questions or comments about the video, feel free to contact either alexmichur00 or me, or post the question / comment here.

EDIT: Woops, wrong forum.  Can some moderator please move this to the "Announcements" forum? Sorry for the hassle. [<--Done! -Ileia]

I enjoyed this. It felt like an homage to classic dance videos. Good sync throughout, nice use of lip sync and in general you guys did a great job of capturing the mood. I wish you had eased up on the rotoscoping -- this was a video that really didn't need any effects work at all, if you ask me. Also, some of the scene selection was pretty uninspired. That Haruhi dance scene just needs to die already.

That said, good job and congrats on your win

Thanks! I do recognize the rotoscoping is strong in this AMV. My primary goal was smoothness and fluidity. If you took notice to the effect, then I think I just have more work to do to "hide" the rotoscope a bit better. It is a bit subjective, but we did try to use Rotoscoping only as a tool to improve the smoothness of the video. I didn't want the video to feel "effects heavy" at all. Still working on that feel I guess.

Ah yes. While Alex and I both agreed that Haruhi needed a cameo, I was the one pushing for more Haruhi dance scenes while Alex was the one who tended to remove them in favor of other characters. Overall, we agreed to use that Haruhi scene for at most one verse/chorus and no more, since we knew many people would share your sentiment. But with that said, neither Alex nor I have had the opportunity to edit with the Haruhi dance yet. I know its like... a decade after everyone else has done it... but personally I wasn't going to let this chance to use Haruhi slip by. I've made a couple of AMVs over the years but have never had the opportunity to use that footage yet and wanted to join in on the fun (even if I am several years late to the party)

I do hope we kept the Haruhi / Lucky Star scenes short enough that you didn't grow bored with our self-indulgence.

That said... after editing like 3 or 4 minutes of less popular anime like Sora no Woto, Tower of Druaga and Doujin Works, the Haruhi section was needed to draw the crowd together again into something that everybody would recognize. I admit that the scene is overused in general, but I think part of the power of verse 4 was feeding off the energy at the crowds at Otakon. It is hard for me to think of a scene as central to AMV Culture as the Haruhi dance.

And even if overused, I hope that some of the cuts were at least somewhat unique. I can't think of another AMV that goes Haruhi -> Chunibyo -> GARDEN OF SINNERS on people. :awesome: :awesome:. (Okay, we did that more for the challenge of a SHIKI scene in a video this upbeat and happy). I do admit that a lot of the Haruhi -> Lucky Star -> Haruhi cuts have been done before.

Again, we hoped to get it "out of the way" by Chorus 5, so that there was a solid 40 or so seconds of Haruhi-free finale available (even if the Finale was using overused footage like Lucky Star and Nichijou). I fully recognize this was an overused scene, so I hope it was "in and out" as painless as possible.
That said, good job and congrats on your win
Thank you very much!
