There are a lot of "veterans" trying to keep "newbies" out of the hobby. That's my guess.
And yeah. People make videos for fun. Or, at least, they used to. Sadly, people on The Forbidden Site probably have that principle down better than we do here.
Anywho, I'm tired, and this is a subject that makes me cranky, so I'm gonna end my rant before it becomes one.

I'd say the simple answer is....... any AMV you make is usually judged against previously made AMVs of the same genre/anime/band/etc/etc. As such when said artist makes their next video they will drive themselves crazy trying to meet an unknown standard that their new AMV should meet.
At least this is the conclusion I came too about myself for a while and what other AMV makers have shared with me as well.
This may not be the case in all scenarios and some may fall into what Jaddzia said about wanting to impress others. In some cases DJ_Ultima is correct in "veteran" needing to inflate their egos by bashing "newbies".
Lots of variables really but eventually the creator will either become "tough skinned", and make projects for the sheer joy of making projects. They will improve their skills greatly and become the "bar" that others ending up setting themselves too. Or finally they will become overly frustrated and quit.
But also I guess I should mention the above situations do not in any way emcompass every member of a-m-v.org, there's many people who still make AMVs just for the sheer fun of making an AMV.
I think this makes sense... but it is 3:30 am. *nods*

You should know that no matter what the hobby or activity is there is always going to be a small/big competitive edge in those who participate. It's human nature to do something you like and try to become better than others at it. Not to say everyone is like that but it might appear that some people are moreso than others. I personally just have more complicated ideas as I continue making videos, so it's not a case of outdoing others so much as it is realizing my concepts. Personally speaking, it can get a bit intimidating when you spend alot of time to realize your ideas and how much difficulty might be involved. So it's more of a personal goal to achieve than it is to top other peoples videos.
Nothing wrong with a little competitive edge though. It seems to inspire/motivate/drive people that extra inch to put forth a bit more effort. But even then, it's still a hobby and should always be in the true spirit of enjoyment of the craft and getting a reaction out of those who see your work. Having fun, learning new stuff and getting to know the editors here is definitely the best part of the hobby.

MMMMMMM, YUMMY CANDY...........Radical_Yue wrote:The only bar I want to live up to is a candy bar. I want to be nothing but yummy goodness.
Other than that, I make whatever the hell I want. It's nice when people like, other than that...COOKIES!!!
and, I guess it depends on the person and their goals whether or not there is a bar (not the candy kind, Yue). I'm still a newb, but each of my vids had a moment or few where I grinned like a cheshire cat when I watched the previews. And a little time after finishing and releasing them, I watch them again and I enjoy myself.
For one or two of the video concepts in my head, there is something of a bar and I don't even know if I'll ever be able to make the video as I see it. But seeing as I prefer editing simpler romantic stuff and basic action-y vids, I'm not even sure a bar exists for the majority of the stuff I want to create.
Now, back to eating my Twix.
