Is it really that hard?

Post by Arcane Azmadi » Tue Dec 14, 2004 6:31 pm

Okay, we've all read the banners, and some of them are really funny. But is coming up with an original AMV idea really that difficult for some people? Our group has a log file which is 4 A4 pages of point 10 typed good AMV ideas (it used to be in excess of 10 pages, but the drive burned out and we lost it) and we're never short of AMVs that are actually within our reach (i.e have access to all necessary material). So I'm just wondering, do people really ever sit down and say to themselves "Damn, I can't think of any ideas", or is it just an ongoing joke?

When a person is bogged down by their jobs, their schoolwork and possible their families, the creative side of our minds can tend to dwindle.

Also, in some cases, it's not the lack of ideas that plagues us: it's the lack of motivation or time to put them into action.

Course it happens. The presence of available ideas in the community doesn't mean a constant presence of ideas for the individual.

Among other things, this is one of the reason's I don't make a video every 2-3 weeks
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

yes... there are times when i have no ideas, and can't think of any what soever. well, at least any "good" ideas.

A good idea of course, to me, involes the following:

do i have the right anime i need?
do i have the right song?
can i edit the video with the skill and experience i currently have?
do i like the idea?
will other people like it?
and finally...

do i have the motivation to do it?

depending on which way you like to work, you will either get an idea from watching and anime, listening to a song, or generate a concept and look for a song/anime. i've done all three. which ever way you choose, just picking a random anime or song can be bad idea. a good idea comes out of research. you have to find the right anime/song. i can't make a video about the hardships of a long distance relationship using an anime that doesn't even have a romantic aspect to it. nor can i do the samething using a song about small things (that kill none-the-less)>.>

there used to be a time where i didn't care about anything and just edited what ever came to mind. that changed. i spend a lot more time thinking over my ideas and trying to find the ones that i like the most.

anyway, thats a lot of ideas you have. are they original tho? i dunno, i havn't seen em :P are they good? they are good if you think they are... we each think differently and thus have different ideas and different ways to gather concepts for amvs.

I never have a lack of ideas, but it's more my lack of motivation, footage, or the lack of time to make them. I currently walk around with a minidisk of 1 GB filled with the songs i have AMV ideas for, just to make sure i don't forget the ideas. Some of them are very good, some of them are impossible to make with my current skill and some of them i don't even want to have them appear under my name, they are that bad, but i want to make them because otherwise i will never get them out of my head.

I think you also need to note the difference between ideas, 'wants' and concrete concepts along with adequate preparedness.

For instance, there's a number of song/anime combos I may like to do, but I don't know how nor think I'm technically or creatively up to the task. My idea of having an idea (ooh, wordplay) is not only being able to imagine an AMV, but also being able to imagine how I'm going to make it.

If I can't imagine myself making a certain AMV, the fact that the song+anime fit in some way isn't going to make a whole lot of difference.

Generaly thier are a few questions I ask myself before starting an amv.

Am I allready making an amv?
Should I screw it and start an new amv?
Is the amv I'm currently working on crap enough to dump or should i work on two at a time?
17747114553?
Would people notice if I stole Pwolf's amv's and uploaded them as my own?
