AMVs before DVDs
I was just wondering how you older creators made videos before everything came out on DVD. Did you buy subs to watch and dubs to use? Maybe you acually watched the dubs. Or did you just use subtitled footage? Was there a way you could take subs off? I've only heard of taking them off with computers.
Did you order stuff from Japan? If so, how'd you get it?
I didn't make AMVs before all the DVDs came out, so I just watched whatever they had at our local movie stores or comic shops (wasn't much). Didn't matter to me whether it was dubbed or subbed, but then, I didn't have to worry about subtitles in my AMVs.
Just wondering how yall did stuff back in the old days.
And if there are any previous threads on this, could you point me their way? I couldn't find much when I did a search...
Thanks!

Yes, I know tapes were used, I was wondering more what they did about subtitles. I've always thought it's so distracting to have subtitles in an AMV, especially if they have nothing to do with the video.
Another option I just thought of that they might have used: using only scenes with no talking.
Guess I should have made that more clear in the first post. Sorry bout that.

Some people used Laserdiscs.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

And as for fansubs, well, they did exist, but another big thing was VHS tapes of the original show without subs at all and a hard-copy translation you held in your hands that you had to read as you went along. The PAUSE button got to be your friend real fast...
