Curious - do you act on ideas fast, or let them wait?

Post by SarahtheBoring » Fri Jun 18, 2004 7:46 pm

Can't phrase that right in so few words. :P

Out of curiosity, do you, Random Editor, jump right into editing a new idea while it's fresh, or do you wait a while, listen to the song or watch the series several times, and see if you still like it after a longer time? Do people tend to do it one way or the other, or does it depend on the video?

I'm not asking anybody to decide the fate of any projects, I just wondered.

I have to wait, cause I always got more important projects lined up in front of it :(

I usually wait, so I can think about it more... I also happen to have a giant list of about 58 different ideas, most of them lame (and probably some have been done already)... plus a few other ideas which I either haven't written down, or have gone on my list of wrong/funny ideas I might submit for AMV Hell 3... still have to decide if I want to submit them for me to do or for the idea database.

Also, at the moment I'm doing a video, so if I have an idea, I can't do it right away.

If I get one, I usually jump on it, edit it for about a day for the first 20 seconds, make a preview and realize "This is a horrible idea." I haven't made a good music video yet. :?

Well, it depends really. Some ideas I just jump into head first because I know I'll never be in the same mood again, such as my most recent video. Some ideas I sketch something out for, or make some initial work for and then let them gestate for a while before returning, such as the one before that.

Others I just keep in for a very long time and don't approach them too closely until I feel I'm ready to do them - usually, this has to do with editing technique. For instance, I knew I wanted to do 'The Wasteland' in a very similar way that it came out - I had the idea probably even before I started editing, but it took several months before I felt confident enough to take any actual steps towards doing it. I have the same thing with... maybe another half-dozen videos that I feel are out of my reach for now because of sheer musical complexity (me being a music-driven editor and all)...

Spaceballs spent about a month as concept, the same in planning, and the actual editing was mostly done during a single week.

I do a bit of both, although the ones I jump right into head on rarely get more than 10% done. Generally, the more I plan the idea out and/or have it visualized in my mind, the more likely it is to be completed.

I usually wait an idea out, to see if it can still hold my interest further on down the line. It also gives me time to do some mental storyboarding, which often piques my interest enough to go ahead and see if I can do what I'm envisioning. The major exception is if I think a particular idea is evident enough that it might be used by someone else if I wait, in which case I'll usually give that one priority.

Both for me too, it depends on the Idea. Ordinary day, I waited on, listened to the song alot, planed alot, and finally did it. Mostly because it was my first. I had to do alot of research first. "WHen I'm with you", and "sexy body cowgirls", I jumped right in with out much planning. Those pretty much flowed as I thought them out. Run away with me, and my latest Angels Redemption, I did alot of planning for in the begining. AR I did both in actually, I started editing, then planned, then edited som more, then planned some more... then edited... I guess I did that one in stages. So I didn't get overwhelmed with all the stuff I did in it. One of the reasons it took over a month to complete, while most of my other ones I finished 2, maybe 3 weeks tops.

I have dozens of Ideas. The trick is to filter out just one, because, for me, editing is a long, involved, time consuming (and rather intimate) process. The "idea" has to be worth it to commit to...kind of like a relationship.

For some, I guess it's enough to jump on it just for the experience. But I like to take my time and judge if the anime/music works for a music video.

In fact, I've been "sitting" on one for over 7 months and every time I re-evaluate it, think about some other potential video idea, I always come back to it because IT JUST WORKS. I have to make this video! Something about it just clicks.
