Justify, eh? Here goes. :P

I prefer to watch amvs at fullscreen with my speakers. When I edit a video using headphones, I tend to sync to things I can't hear when I watch the final video with my speakers. So the editing looks randomly synced, because it's synced to things that aren't audible. That looks tacky. That looks bad. I don't like that. So I try not to edit with headphones, knowing I'll be watching without them.

If I actually liked watching amvs with headpones on, I'd edit with them on. I'd rather undersync than sync to things that aren't there when I watch the vid with my speakers or my television.

Note: Headphones hurt my ears. I have to kill my audio just to get the volume to a low enough setting to use headphones. I do edit with headphones sometimes because there's an office downstairs and the walls are thin, but I resent every second of it and wish I'd just waited till the weekend or some time after midnight. I only watch amvs with headphones when I absolutely can't wait for the office downstairs to close.

I didn't realize this for a long time though, now I have some vids that some people find to be oddly synched because they never watched them with headphones on.

It's nothing new to me - being seriously into music, I could always tell the difference between speakers and headphones, or among different speakers and headphones - and a big difference sometimes it is.

Naturally, when I edit something, I usually edit it in headphones but try to test it thoroughly on speakers, as well as other people's computers (it's a good idea anyway).

There are a couple of videos I edited almost entirely on speakers, though.

My headphones aren't good enough for that, I just turn up the speakers really loud.

I edit with headphones on, but if i'm doing a lot of patterned syncs, i'll just use math to my advantage and figure out where certain markers should be placed on the time line. Of course i have an audiophile SRT roommate that checks all the syncing for me whenever i bug him to. Those should come standard with editing suites. :?

By the way, headphones shouldn't hurt ears, you just have crappy headphones then :P

(though to be honest, most headphones and especially in-ear phones hurt my ears too; the result was that I looked carefully into open monitors and ended up with a very comfy pair of Sennheiser HD515s which solved that particular issue for me)

Another thought:
I like watching AMVs on other peoples' computers, just to see what the difference is

No, you're not.

It's just that I'm too traumatized by the loss of my iPod to even mention it
