no drugs here either
mine normally come to me when I'm alone in work with my 300 track CD blaring into my ears. Ever since I was little I pictured "movies" along with music (my first ones I recall were synching The Animals Of Farthing Wood to Billy Joel. Yes, I'm serious.) and that trend stays with me to this day - just now it happens to be anime floating around in my head.

Boring mass-transit commute, i.e. I don't have to concentrate on driving + music = random mental images. Like always. It's just that since I got into AMVs, sometimes my mental images will latch onto borrowed images and there you have it. My skill still only produces lame echoes of that, but that's all it is. If I could draw, there'd be actual fun, but I can't.
Probably comes from too much TV in one's formative years or something.
Caffeine doesn't inspire me; it just keeps me awake long enough to sink some time into the editing process.

I draw influence just from things around me, whether it be something from class or a drawing I see on a wall. Just a lot of random things from my daily experience. Solid ideas come to me right before I'm going to go to sleep though.

My editing ideas usually come from when I am in a semi comatose state on the bus ride home. Well I could say when I'm in any mindwandering state. I daydream a lot so if I have music playing I see stuff in my head. Unfortunately half the things in my head I can't do due to lack of knowledge/time to play around.
On rare occasions I will find something nice on a video on TV and I'll try to imitate.

usually I get my ideas just from hearing the song, and ocasionally when watching the anime. Very few times I may get an idea spawned from another video, but I don't do it if I can;t make it original enough from the original video. I do however get ideas for effects and such from other media sources. sometimes others AMVs, Movies, Commercials, Profesional music videos, anything of that nature. sometimes even video games. Other times I just accidentally find an effect I like just playing with different combinations of filters in Premeire, Photoshop, Gimp, or After effects.

Yeah, no drugs here, either...can't say that I've *never* tried a few things...but I can say that I don't play with them now, and I definitely haven't done so in the amv creation process.
Now alcohol...that's another story.
However, I've found that it's extremely hard for me to beat synch something when I'm so stupidly smashed...though the end result was rather amusing.
I guess I'm also one of those that "zones" on a regular basis as a source of inspiration. There's a large lake about 5 hours away from me that has some amazing rock formations and forest surrounding it...when I really need the zone time, that's where I go. Sometimes I bring music, other times not. But, then again, I can get lost in thought pretty easy. And daydreaming at work...yeah, that's a *major* part of the amv process for me...
