The easy way doesn't have to be taking other people's work without permission.

For me, the easy way is to edit simple A/B track projects. That's easy. You just take your own footage and place it as desired... :?

Again, acknowledging the original AMV is probably the first step you should take. But the only way to make this really acceptable is to go out and get the original editor's permission. Then - there's no problem whatsoever, I think. Quality concerns are quality concerns, but I'd worry about authorship first and foremost.

I think the point people are trying to make (and something I know I've brought up on panels, and I've heard on other panels, as well)...

We don't own the video. We don't own the audio. Really, the only thing we put into our videos are our edits. The way we edit our footage is our only claim-to-fame (so to speak... hopefully not literally) on the videos. If you just take someone else's "edits," you're taking, quite honestly, the ONE thing that they were able to create and produce as a piece of art.

So yeah. You aren't as dedicated when you steal someone else's work. No, we can't really do shit about it (other than whine and moan), and no, you probably won't be disqualified from any contests (unless they feel strongly about the matter), but...

Your video isn't going to look as good as it could be, you're cheating the original editor, and you're cheating yourself. Cliche sounding, yeah... but it's the truth.

If anyone were to use my AMVs for footage I would prefer they ask me first.

This is the mentality of a criminal though. 'Why the fuck should I go bust my ass at a job when I can just shoot someone else and take THEIR money?' You're making the analogy that theives = working class.

Way to go.

If you truely believe that, then you might want to re-evaluate your position in society.

Aside from that, damn near every single one of us is doing basically the same thing by using the anime that others created. I don't hesitate to use their transitions, etc., to my benefit.... But we are using it in a slightly different form of expression as well. Music videos vs. 'original anime'. So that it where I personally make the distinction. If i was going to take footage from azumanga daioh to make my own anime that'd be one thing....... but I digress.
