If you worried about the legal side of this hobbie leave now.

It's also illegal to speed but how often do you abide by that 55 mph speed limit on the interstate? Its illegal to be drunk in public but how many people wandering around con with cups don't have some form or another of alcohol in said drink? It's illgeal to share or d/l MP3s on a p2p network that doent' pay royalties to the artists agents, but how many of you are going delete you entire collection just to satiate some paranoid record agency fat cats wallets? Not that either of these solutions are the "correct one," but a simple law isn't going to stop the majority of us here.

No, it's still illegal.
NO, it not illegal to make a music video and show it to a friend in the privacy of your own home...

If is illigal to show it in public or distribute on the internet... However, if the companies who own the rights allow the showing of AMVs (i.e. they don't do anythign about it) then it boils down to ethics (i.e. not selling them for profit) in my opinion...

One should note, there are a LOT or products we all use infrince in some way on someone's copyright or patent, but the holders don't bother doing anything about it....

A sticky like that would be useful, but it would also get linked a lot... and google archived... and be a big flag that said "HEY LOOK GUYS WE'RE INFRINGING YOUR COPYRIGHT!". This is why there's no official statement on the org about legality... there's no point bringing attention to the fact.

Found it at another forum.

Anyways, does this mean we should scrap any plans for that section on the AMVWiki? (Check out the discussion page as well.)

I've got a new theory on why the org hasnt bein locked down. Generaly organisations like the riaa use specialised search tools to search through web sites and find ones with "suspicios files". Seeing as "www.animemusicvidoes.org" doesnt directly link to any files, its pretty hard for a search tool to find the files.

In case the org is shut down or gets legal threats in the future, what would the chances be of it moving to a "freindlier" country like china or canada? Also, has the thought of seting up a proxy server or two in another country (at least for the site, as a proxy server for the donut would iether be too expensive or slow downloads alot) bein taken into consideration? It's stupid to think that the org will last in its current state for years and years to come, esspecialy with the server being located in the usa.

If AMVs are illegal, then why do conventions have AMV contests and openly advertise them?

Plus also they show AMVs from other creators that have never gone to that con and may even live in another country. For example- I saw Odorikuruu at a con in 2002 and another one in 2003. It was not part of the contest in either one of them.

Many amv contests contain a get-out clause that establishing the rights for the video is the responsiblity of the creator so that if they ever got in any trouble it wouldnt be the con's fault. (I recall AX having such a clause in the past).

Cons also have licenses for showing anime and may well gain a general license for exhibition purposes for music too - so I'd imagine cons are much more covered than we are legally.
