CLAMP in Wonderland 2!

Post by angelx03 » Fri Nov 02, 2007 11:47 pm

Mwahahaha, Madhouse Studios has once again animated a new music video commemorating CLAMP's works from the beginning up to the this present day. The story concept is pretty simple. Basically the 2 Mokonas from xxxHolic wanted to go on a journey based on the manga Yuko was reading so she sent them off. Then comes nostalgia time where you get to see your favorite CLAMP characters being reanimated as the Mokonas go through the various worlds. The song "action!" sung by Maaya Sakamoto sounds appropriately catchy and bouncy!

Oh yeah, definitely worth checking out especially for you CLAMP fans out there! 8-)

Yeah, when I first heard of it, I'm pretty sure I did a fangirl squee - and it was merited, too! It was a really cute video.

I'd make more comments, but I don't wanna spoil it for anyone. No, I won't even use the spoiler tag. It's like pushing the red button everyone tells you not to push. You just KNOW you'll want to look at the comments.

Being the CLAMP fan I am, I preordered this DVD as soon as I heard about it, so I managed to get a first pressing version of it, which includes a 250-page "booklet" (I call it a book) with the storyboards and continuity drawings for both CiW videos, which is a really nice extra. I'm especially glad that it came with both CLAMP in Wonderland videos on the DVD, since the first one is the only CLAMP anime that hadn't had a DVD release yet (the only other CLAMP-based work without DVD release is the mostly-forgotten live-action Tokyo Babylon: 1999 movie).

The first CiW vid is pretty grainy, but it's 13 years old, so it's fairly excusable. It's going to need a pretty hefty dose of deen if I decide to use it for source, though. The audio is nice and clear, though.

The new one is just plain gorgeous, start to finish. Madhouse has produced a gorgeous musical short (and Maaya doing the music only makes it better).

As to the content of the new video, my comments are under the spoiler tags:
Spoiler :
Yuuko's reading Rayearth! Yay! (That's about ten pages into the series).

Aw, cute backpack... which gets left when they leave... what's the point?

Oh, MAN, awesome Rayearth scene! First new MKR footage in nearly ten years! *happy dance* And the CG mech doesn't look nearly as bad as I thought it could be.

Kobato's tester/dog-thing (I can't remember his name) vs. Kero and Suppie is amusing.

Kinda sad to see 20 Mensou, Shin Shunka-Den, and Shirahime-syo only in the background of the dancing Mokonas. The new Mokonas meet the original, which is awesome.

Kohaku does the transition very cutely. Too bad it's her only appearance.

Chobits never struck me well, but the scene is amusing, especially with the Mokonas in persocom-ears.

And the transition is Primera this time, nicely done.

And RG Veda gets a very silly scene, much like their scene in CiW1. CUT! :)

(Notice the clapboard contents: "Mount of Potato" OP, Take 1, roll 4. The silliness continues.)

Gohou Drug appears, Suki, Dakara Suki gets a cameo (I wanted more, I liked that series a lot), and the Mokonas burst into Tokyo Babylon. Seishirou is SCARY, but in a laughable way.

And they bound into Angelic Layer and it's Mokona vs. Hikaru. Gorgeous high-action sequence.

And then it's Clover's turn. The Mokonas have the mechanical wings, too? Nice to see this unfinished series get some new animation (only a few months after the old short finally hit DVD).

The X scene is hysterical. Kamui vs. Fuma (w/ glasses? When did that happen?) over okonomiyaki. Pure greatness. Yuzuriha's got her cat ears after the explosion, too.

CLAMP School Detectives and Duklyon only show up as posters. Sadness.

There's Miyuki's obligitory cameo.

And now it's CCS! During the Clow Card story arc, too. I wonder if they damaged that card popping out of it like that?

And then it's the Tsubasa cast, with S&S's alter egos leading the charge on dragons. Nice.

And the final scene is the Mokonas popping out of a volume of Tsubasa in front of a book retailer's shelf of CLAMP manga... In order (r to l, top to bottom), Chobits, Gohou Drug, xXxHolic, Tsubasa, ?, CCS, Wish, Clover, Suki Dakara Suki, Angelic Layer, Duklyon, CLAMP School Detectives, Rayearth, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, Shin Shunka-den, 20 Mensou, RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon, Shirahime-syo, and X that I recognize. The one in the top right could be one of a number of things, but no covers I saw matched exactly.

And the credits are cute, but I liked the ones for CiW1 and Wish much better.
And now that I finally have all of them on DVD, I'm working on putting all five CLAMP shorts onto a single DVD.

Me, too. I'm still trying to hunt down a copy of the VHS. It's not very easy.

It's always interesting to see what an animation studio does when they create an AMV. I wish Netflix had this on DVD. Thanks for bringing this to our attention angelx03.
