Let's use official torrents instead of hosting!
THIS IS LEGAL! Don't get it confused with piracy! Read on -
See, hosting all these anime music videos must be expensive and time consuming. I think we should have a process like so:
Say "x" wants to submit an anime music video. He makes a .torrent file that contains the amv and only the amv. He uploads the .torrent file to [Sites removed.]. Then he sends the link to it to AMV.com, where one of the chosen community members will review it to make sure that it isn't spam or porno or whatever. Once the member says it's okay, he gives the maker a special link on the site, which says something like "This torrent has been approved by Anime Music Videos dot org!". Then "x" can include the link in the description of his torrent!
This way we don't have to pay ANY bandwidth cost, and the download speeds for good amvs will increase drastically because we can encourage members to seed, which means helping the uploader of a torrent host it, amvs that they thought were great.

Its been talked about quite a bit.
Don't think that would ever happen since there would be alot of issues with it.

Argh, none of the topics are clear in their point. What exactly is wrong with using torrents, or more specifically, my system?moonie211 wrote:Its been talked about quite a bit.

Making selected member(s) approve the AMV before it can be .org hosted would require a lot of time, when it is just as simple to drop a post in the mod drop box about it breaking rules. Also we don't want to support the torrent sites that allow downloading of illegal material, since that goes against the site rules.

I agree, and some of us
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>me<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
have had bad experiences with torrents anyway.
Plus theres no way to make sure that the files don't contain other malicious software.
I know of a keylogger that can be attached to any type of file, and is completely undetecable, and its main way of getting around is through torrent files.
Me no trusty deh torrent-shtuff

Everything came from nothing, therefore everything is nothing.
There's nothing to worry about.

I think that those threads were perfectly clear as to why torrents aren't for amvs.
One person trying to give 100 people a file doesn't work very well (this is most like the case for amvs)
100 people trying to give 40 a file works out better...but the chance that a particular amv would have more than one seed is very low. After time passes there probably wouldn't be even one seed

Torrents work on the idea people want something so they grab it then share it to new people for awhile then those new people share it to yet newer people and so on. Most only share torrents till get get a specific seeding/leeching ratio (if they seed at all) so the torrent stays alive as long as new people keep grabbing then sharing it. Once new people stop grabbing the torrent then it usually dies fairly quickly.
Now most videos take years to get even a hundred downloads. There just isn't enough people to support the constantly rolling over of leechers turn to seeders that a torrent needs. In the end only the creator would be torrenting his stuff and lets face it, torrents with a single seeder who generally has slow upload capabilities just suck. And that's assuming the creator is online to seed and is interested in still seeding even years later. Odds are they got discouraged or bored and quit long ago. The end result would be videos would have very slow download times when they're available but most just wouldn't be available.
Now contrast this to central hosting like the org has. The video is always available and from a source where the download is quick. It doesn't rely on people being constantly interested, it'll still be available even if it's been months since the last download. So, as all those discussions before go over, some specific torrents like the top 10% or VCA finalist might work but for most videos central hosting like the org just works better than torrents.
