Using Bittorrent on the server to save bandwidth costs?

Post by bob0linus » Wed Nov 09, 2005 5:39 am

It would help the site defray costs and growth issues if the music videos were availble through bittorrent protocol rather than http downloads.

Setting up a tracker for video downloads would use much less bandwidth for the server than trying to pipe all the file data directly from the server to end users.

I'm new, so maybe I'm an idiot. :)

Not necessarily an idiot, just new; you probably haven't seen the other 3000 threads in this forum that have already discussed this topic to death and back.

Bittorrent is a fundamentally bad fit for most of the videos on the .org; there's about 200 videos each month that it could give some bandwidth savings on, but this is a tiny fraction of the overall catalog. 99.5% of videos would not be materially helped, and perhaps harmed (given the overhead of running the trackers) by using BT instead of good old http.

I'd link to the last thread we had in which Coderjoe gave these stats, but I'm lazy and haven't slept in 22 hours.

Bittorent would make things worse as you'll have to store not only the AMv but also the torrent file with it. AND maitaine a high bandwidth to keep up the download speeds...

You don't understand what you're talking about. The size of a torrent file is negligible and the video files are stored already. The bandwidth that the org would need to maintain (assuming that the org would seed the files too), would be equal to the current bandwith or lower (since other people would be seeding too). There are two reasons not to go with bittorrent:
1) A tracker this size is a very cpu intensive program (so much so that it would probably require new hardware), since only a couple of the video's on this site are donloaded often enough to justify a torrent it wouldn't work . I read somewhere that his is why archives.org doesn't use bittorrent.
2) Bittorrent is stringly associated with illegal activity, which might make us pop up on the *AA's radar a little faster.

As I understand it, that's why bittorrent isn't used.

Although i'm usually on your side on this argument, I figure it may be a good idea to point out the uTorrent system (the u should be a greek letter "mu"). Unlike other torent clients, it works supprisingly well with very little in terms of system usage.

Personally, I've never had it go above 6.5MB and 5% CPU on my P4 2.4GHz system dispite having on the order of 100+ files at once being used at once.

Bundled amv into larger packages?

Post by bob0linus » Fri Nov 11, 2005 6:57 am

As a possible new addict, there are too many to choose from. :)

I was wondering if packages could be put together by category, awards, or artist where you can just torrent a whole pack at once instead of individually selecting files.

Yeah, I figured that opening my mouth without searching past archives or lurking for a month or two would result in repeating the obvious. :)

The supersearch makes it quite easy to find all the AMVs in a contest or with a particular artist or even all: AWA pro, inuyasha, linkin park, breaking the habit, locally availible, less than 50 Mb, greater than 30 Mb, 80th percentile star score, premiered since yesterday, in the .avi format, by Bakadeshi of AuN Studios, called freezaballX, not downloaded, spoilerless, containing the word here in the comments, videos.

Of which there are none.

You might try the top ten percent list to find good videos, which is filterable by genre or type. The recomended AMV's forum is another good place to start.
