Whats a gif and a jpg?

I'm trying to put a picture on my profile on AMV, but when I pick one, then press update, it gives me something saying that theres an error with the image, that it has to be a gif or jpg. Whats that?

Its an image file format.

Your image file format has to be either jpg or gif to use for your profile
