Wasn't sure whether to put this in The Org Redesign or not, so move it to the applicable thread if you like, mods.
Let's see if I can explain this clearly...
You know how we have a Favorite AMVs list on our profile? If memory serves, the list only goes up to 100 videos, and only those videos for which we've left an opinion can be ranked upon it. Here's the thing... I keep WAY more than 100 videos in my permanent collection, and actually, I'm less likely to leave an opinion for something I really liked, because I typically have no suggestions for improvement (and gushing fanpraise can be left in a quick comment just as well, I think).
Now, everyone and their grandma has had to hear me whine about my epic hard drive crash and the subsequent loss of my whole AMV collection. I was thinking, "Man, it would be nice if I could have just clicked some button on the video info pages to tag videos that I kept, and then have that be an option in the (Donator's) Super Search. It would really cut down on this searching-through-8000+-Already-Downloaded-Local-AMVs business."
I just know that someone is going to bring up the "Video Queue" function that we already have, but it's not quite the same. You could sort of use it for that purpose, but I don't know how many videos you can queue in total, and what happens when I actually go to use it for its intended purpose? Great, now I have one un-downloaded AMV swimming in a list of who-knows-how-many already-downloaded videos. (I'm guessing on the functionality here, since I've never actually put that feature to work.)
So how about it? I can't be the only one who would use something like that. I mean, for me right now, it's more like shutting the barn door after the cows are already out (AKA: wish I would have thought of this before I lost everything), but it would be a great help should I ever experience this kind of catastrophic failure again.
I realize that in the Big Picture overhaul of this site, this is something really minor and not a priority at all right now, but I wanted to throw it out there. Thanks for the consideration.

Just so you know, you don't have to leave an op to add an AMV to your favorites.
(I have AMVs on fav list, and I've never given a formal op since I joined the org)
Regardless, if we get the ability to create Playlists (like I will keep pushing for
) that would probably address the problem. If you liked a video you would just add it to a playlist.
Tip: If you run the following script in any folder, it will generate a log of all the files within that folder (including subfolders for say, favorites, action, comedy...)

Code: Select all
dir /s /b > "AMV.log"
- 1. Have File Extensions showing in Windows (like AMV.mp4)
2. Right-click > New Text Document.txt
3. Open it and paste the above script
4. Save as list.bat and put it where your AMVs are
5. Double-click list.bat

Re: A Tag Button on Info Pages?
old post, but I just wanted to add, try this:
Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery (it's free, just skip the support/donate section)
...ofc, this won't work if the HDD failure is mechanical, otherwise, the data is still physically on the drive, it's just a matter of whether you can access it or not.

Actually, I don't mind that you bumped this, because I wanted to add something, but I didn't think of it 'til some time after you responded.
You mentioned creating a log of my AMVs, and while that is helpful, it doesn't do me much good if I were to lose all of my data again. I would lose the log too, no? (Yes, yes, back up my data and all that jazz. I know - but for argument's sake...) That's why I'm pushing for something on this site. Even if I lost my list/log, one would still be here, safe and sound.
I will look at that other site, but I'm not sure that there's anything that can be done for my drive at this point - at least nothing that I would be willing to try for fear of permanent damage or ridiculous costs.

Re: A Tag Button on Info Pages?
Well, I bumped this because I had a HDD crash recently
But I got the whole thing back with Recuva
Some things you should know about HDD recovery:
-Stop using the drive (data is usually good as long as it is not overwritten)
-No mechanical failures (your computer still needs to be able to recognize the drive)
-Backup to a new location/HDD (This keeps the old data safe-- otherwise you risk overwriting other data you want to recover)
-You may have to change the scan settings to go deeper into the drive
-be sure you check the setting that restores the folder structure (otherwise files will be unorganized)
Regarding the AMV.log: I find it's easier to backup the tiny .log file than your whole AMV collection. Mass backups are annoying. Just use a usb drive, or something like Dropbox which syncs files automatically (Lately I use this for everything I don't want to lose. Great program. Even has web hosting for my mockup below. If you are interested, use my referral link so we both get an extra 250MB) If you want to make backups easier, you can change the output directory in the log script:While it would be nice to have some sort of record-keeping tools integrated into the site, I would still make logs of everything. It has the advantage of recording *all* files in the folder (like DL's from external links, or places like akross/amvnews). I do this with my music collection too

Re: A Tag Button on Info Pages?
This is one of the reasons I have a RAID 1 array...
Absent RAID redundancy you ought to invest in an external drive for backing up your files in general. (There are other files you don't want to lose besides AMVs right???) External terabyte drives are fairly cheap these days (i.e. less than $80) and come with software to maintain backups automatically.
