RAM delema
mmk. I'm in the process of getting a new desktop.
At this moment I'm debating whether I should go with 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x512M) or spend an extra $330 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x1GB).
The computer would have Pentium® 4 Processor 560 with HT Technology (3.60GHz, 800 FSB). So as far as video editing would go, would the 1 gig option suffice?

As long as the Motherboard can supposrt extra RAM, you might be better off buying additional RAM elseware... somewhere like newegg.com or tigerdirect.com usually has better prices on RAM then the company you're buying the computer from, especially from companies like Dell, HP, etc.

I'd have to agree w/ everybody else. 512 in dual channel mode should be able to run in regular mode (depending on your MoBo) if you need the extra headroom for RAM. If you decide to take that option, there may be a slight performance loss b/c the ram is running in single channel mode instead of dual; but then again the 'extra' headroom may allow you somewhat compensate for the speed reduction. I am also in the process of building a very similar system, but with a P4 640 instead. If you decide to spend the extra $$ and go for the 2x1 Gig in dual channel, make sure that you get it from a reputable manufacturer. New Egg is a good place to start. I was out of the loop for a while but after a few weeks of scowering hardforum.com (many sleepless nights) I was able to make a more informed decision on which MoBo, CPU, RAM, etc. I was going use to build my system; If you want to see what some of the 'big boys' use, this is a pretty good place to start, even if you aren't going to over clock your system...
that's just my .02

sorry about the bump...
one last thing, you may or may not already be aware of. If you get a Dell, Hp, etc. and are not going to buy your RAM from the company you purchaced the PC from, make sure that the RAM you get is compatable with your system, or you'r going to spend more time RMAing than editing vids. Or, just go with a good intel chipset MoBo (i915 for example) by Asus or even Intel, or some other good MoBo maker. Intel chipsets are pretty much the most trouble free (VIA, SiS, nForce) for editing systems.

You shouldn't need any more than 512 for normal editing scenarios. Especially with the speed of the system you are talking about. Since most NLE's are more relient on hard drive speed and raw processing power. A gig of RAM should be nice though as it allows for better OS performance and for multitasking scenarios. If you bust into more high end stuff like after effects or combustion then you need more RAM as these programs typically render to RAM vs. rendering to disk like premiere does.
