AMVApp - Compressing to the smallest file size

Post by GloryQuestor » Tue Jan 25, 2005 7:30 pm

Okay, I need some help with this.

I picked out a 23 minute episode and ripped the footage with DVD Encryptor (using Stream Processing -- Video only), then use DGIndex to make an AviSynth Index file.

Now I'm at the point where I use VirtualModDub to make the AVI file, but every time I rip a 23-minute episode of anything, the least size I can get (following the documentation, I'm using HuffYUY as the compressor, ConvertToYUY2() in the script, and saving it to AVI format in a Split of 50MB each file) is 5 GB!

I need it to be much smaller than that to be able to fit more footage for my AMVs. Heck, I need it to be smaller just to fit it on my hard drive. :?

If anyone can help me compress my movies much smaller, please help! :D

Bait and switch is your freind. (see guide for details)

I've made music videos using 4 full DVD's of footage with only about 6 GB's of HDD space. (of course if you can free up more temporarily you can skip a lot of steps, but even a single 20 GB HDD can be sufficent if you know what your doing.)

First off, thank you for all your advice. I really appreciate it. :D

Both of these looked like they weren't tested with WMM2, so I didn't consider them. Can you edit AviSynth directly with WMM2?

I'm looking into getting Adobe Premiere Elements as a replacement for WMM2. Does anyone know if this program can do the same things as 2) and 3) in the above guide page that the other Adobe Premiere versions mentioned can?

I'll check the guide again and look for this one. Thanks. :)

Really! I am interested in how you did that. I am currently converting files to AVI, 36 total about 23min each. I have a 20 gig hard drive and at the current compression rate all 36 eps will come to about 10gigs. The quality is near DVD. If you can do better i would like to know, as space is at a premium on my PC.

not directly. one extra step is required.

the idea behind bait and switch is that you first compress a really low bitrate version of all your footage. then you figure out which scenes you want to use. after that, you only compress the scenes you will use in your video at a high bitrate with a lossless codec. so you end up with 36 episodes at a low bitrate and maybe 5-10 minutes of footage at a high bitrate, and hopefully neither should take up too much space.

Well, I followed Scintilla's instructions to the letter and used DVD Encryptor / DGIndex to set up the file for R.O.D. The TV Volume 1 (which is all together in one file, instead of being four separate parts).

Unfortunately, when I go to import, I'm getting an error:

Code: Select all

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\My Documents\My Videos\My AMV Material\Movies\ROD\ROD_1-4.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.
Here is my AVISynth script:

Code: Select all

#ASYNTHER Default (AVISource)
AVISource("C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny\My Documents\My Videos\My AMV Material\Movies\DG Indexes\ROD_1-4.avs")
Telecide(Order=1)
ComplementParity()
ConvertToRGB32()
Can anyone tell me what else I might need to do to get it to work right?

Thanks. :D

What on earth?

Oh... I think I know what the problem is.

When loading an AVS file in VDub(/Mod), <i>don't select "Open file via AVISynth..."</i>, as counterintuitive as that sounds.
Just open it like you'd open a normal AVI file.

The <b>AVISource()</b> command doesn't work on .AVS files.
You should be loading your footage with something like this:
<b>MPEG2Source("C:\blah blah blah\myDGIndexfile.d2v")</b>
