Sin City Effect?

Post by MoMeNToUs CeLTiC » Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:17 pm

Anybody know how to do this? Particularly in Sony Vegas 6.0. If you haven't seen Frank Miller's "Sin City" here are a couple of shots of what I'm talking about.

What I want to do (as you can see in the screenshots) is have everything black and white while one thing in the video has a splash of color on it. Again, I'm using Sony Vegas 6.0, but not limited. If you know how to do this please let me know..
Oi.

Very careful masking of the colored layer over a black and white layer would do it.

I don't know specifically how you could get that effect, but playing around with some masking effects where you knock out one color and have a black and white version underneath could get you the effect you need. I'm not sure if that made any sense, but it's what I thought of first.

I guess I was onto something, Kalium said almost exactly what I did as I was making the first post.

There was an article on how to do this on CreativeCow (IIRC) but it was for premiere. If there's similar effects in Vegas, it should work.

I actually did something like this before... I think an inverted color matte would work for a really prominant color.

Didn't someone do a Bebop/Sin City trailer that copied that effect?

Masking is the only thing I can think of.

If it's a simple object your trying to highlight in that fasion, you *might* be able to get away with using the various garbage mattes in premiere to help you out. But otherwise, until proven wrong, you're going to have to mask it.

There's a really easy way to do this in Final Cut Pro using the Color Corrector. No masking involved. You just limit saturation to a certain color range...in case there's something in Vegas similar to that.
