Anime Expo 2010 Iron Chef AMV Contest
No, you are not seeing things! Anime Expo has (tentatively) committed to having their own Iron Chef AMV competition, and I've been asked to put it together (with a lot of help from XStylus, natch).
For full disclosure, everything at this point is very preliminary (and yes, I know the convention is in two weeks). We do not yet know the date, time, or location of the venue, or if we can requisition the equipment on such short notice. However, I have been given the green light to announce this on the Org and invite everyone to attend, from AMV creators to anyone you might know who really wants to see in person how AMV's are made.
More importantly, if any AMV creator out there is up to challenging the AX Iron Chefs in a battle of the edit bays, please PM me ASAP with your credentials and software experience.
Yes, you heard me right. Unlike other Iron Chef competitions, where both participants are pre-selected, a single challenger chooses which of the Iron Chefs they will compete against. This year's Iron Chefs have already been selected, but their identities will remain concealed until they are introduced at the event.
Aside from that, the format will be the same or similar to other competitions. All participating editors will know in advance the theme they are to use for their video. They can bring with them up to five songs of their choosing that they think they might use (preferably on a thumb drive or CD for quick import). They will also know all but one of the animation (not necessarily anime) source materials contained on the computer hard drives. The remaining source - the "secret ingredient" - will be revealed just before the clock starts.
Competing editors will have three hours to put together the best AMV they can using the existing source materials on identical computers (considering the number of editors that work with Windows machines, we are shooting for two Windows computers equipped with at least Adobe Premiere, possibly other post-production software). At least one clip from the secret ingredient must be used, but points will be assigned to how effectively it is used, so editors will need to do more than just throw in one random clip from that source.
During the three hours, AMV's will be shown, with an emphasis on the competing editors' previous work, and status reports will be given, including, equipment permitting, live feeds from the computers and a handheld camera. At the end of three hours, all editing must stop, although editors will be allowed a final render. Videos will be screened for the judges, who will determine "whose cut is most choice." If the challenger wins, they will be invited to join the Iron Chefs the following year.
Again, this is all preliminary. The logistics, scoring, and of course the sources and theme are TBD. Follow this thread for further details as soon as I have them.

It has been a long time since I saw the Iron Chef AMV event at AWA, I'm looking forward to this.

Can you explain this part a little more? Will people be challenging the Iron Chefs? I'm a little confused since it the competitors were already preselected and your asking for creators to challenge the AX Iron Chefs. Is it more of a 1 v 1, creators versus the Iron Chefs?MisterFurious wrote:More importantly, if any AMV creator out there is up to challenging the AX Iron Chefs in a battle of the edit bays, please PM me ASAP with your credentials and software experience.

Re: Anime Expo 2010 Iron Chef AMV Contest
There are four Iron Chefs who are already selected. We are looking for someone to volunteer to be the challenger, who will choose one of the four Iron Chefs to go up against. At that point, it becomes challenger vs. Iron Chef. One-on-one.Ryvannis wrote:MisterFurious wrote:Can you explain this part a little more? Will people be challenging the Iron Chefs? Nope. I just want to know what experience the potential challengers have with AMV's. It would be a pretty boring competition if the challenger was some noob who had never cut a video in their life. And using PM would allow us to withhold the identity of the challenger until the event, to create more drama.Brad wrote:Credentials? Do people need like a cover letter and references too?
Be that as it may, from looking at your experience, you would certainly qualify. You interested?
