Re: How do you judge contest credibility?
My only problem with specific requirements is the time in general. Having to re-set things, re-render blah blah blah. Upload it again. And sometimes having to watch it again - by this point I have seen it so many times the thought of watching it again - and HEARING it again - makes me dizzy.

Exactly, just because you're lazy doesn't make a contest any worseBasharOfTheAges wrote:This thread isn't really supposed to be about actively complaining about what contests do, but rather, the things they do that make you just walk away and not take them seriously enough to participate in the first place.

Re: How do you judge contest credibility?
Honestly, website design is a really big issue with me when I look at credibility. If any of you have used NgSilver's contest database [or A-Kon/Otakon, they're pretty good too], THAT is how they should look. Simple design, simple/clear instructions and not a clusterfuck of information EVERYWHERE AND NOWHERE AT THE SAME TIME. Colors that are easy on the eyes, no ridiculous flash animations poofying up the place, and just a generally "Hey. I can see where I am going and where I need to click in order to submit my entries and enter information!"

Re: How do you judge contest credibility?
The biggest factor that will make me turn heel is the contest coordinator's attitude. I've seen some really petty, childish behavior from a few (Note: At no point should you EVER call your entrants "stupid".) that's made up my mind to never submit so long as they are running the contest. It's harder if I've never submitted before and in that case, I just follow the thread for awhile before deciding. There was one contest that I was considering until I read the coordinator's response to a question about the rules, which was essentially "If you don't like it, too bad, you don't have to submit, we don't need your AMVs." And sometimes you have a thread where people have been asking questions and the coordinator hasn't responded at all. Perhaps not always true, but my mindset is coordinator = bad, then contest = bad.

i don't know what software you have that makes it so fast for you, but for me it takes a lot longer than a couple minutes. but either way, it's fair enough for cons to require specifics like that, i'm just saying i'm less likely to enter if it requires me to put more time into a finished video>> UNLESS i plan on attending the convention, then i'd be likely to put forth the effort.Pwolf wrote:That's actually not entirely unreasonable if you know the technical reasons why someone would want you to do that. Not to mention it's not that difficult to take your master copy and add 2 seconds of black to the beginning and end. i actually try to do this every time I edit so I don't have to do it afterwards. If you have to re-encode the video for the con, its only a minute or two amount of extra work (if that) so it's really not that bad.Rider4Z wrote: but requiring specific amounts of black before and/or after the video is pushing it.

Half of the conventions take place at the same time. It's impossible to attend every con unless you clone yourself.Rider4Z wrote:i'll enter anything if:
1.) i'm not required to attend. i would love to attend any and all conventions in north america but i work and need money to pay for my mortgage and car. i enter contests not to win but to give my videos exposure. whether i make the finals / win is up to the judges and/or audience.

Code: Select all
video = avisource("mastercopyofvideo.avi")
padding = blackness(video, color=$000000, length=48)
return padding ++ video ++ padding
