i understand how you feel. there are some videos that i've seen that don't seem to be u to par (compared to mine at least), but don't get me wrong I've ssen some that totally knock mine out of the box and don't get enough credit for it. yu do have a point though about people giving good score just because of song or anime choice. when i joined this site, i promised myself that i was gonna be as original as they come despite of what other expectations of AMVs are. But my thing is this, if you know that your video is worth more than people can see, then just try and milk the video for all that you think it's worth: contact other members about your new video, post it in the forums, you can even tell your online pen pals about it; the bottom line is that you just gotta make your video seem like it's is worth looking at regardless of what anime or song that you use. I'll watch a video regardless of what is used, but i will still be honest about it whether it's dynamic or half-assed. You just gotta advertise it around the .org and milk it for all that it's worth. pure and simple. but also like what was said in this post before, if you do all that you can to get people to know about your video and you know its good, but no one likes then it's their problem. you can always enter you stuff in contests and let your work speak for itself. in the end, you know what's true and what's false.

Part of it too is how much recognition you crave. I mean, sure, I would love my videos to be hot shit in the AMV world, that'd rock. But that's not why I make AMVs. I make them for the outlet, so I can say "This is my idea, my concept." It's not for the minuscule amount of fame in an internet subculture, it's about my desire and ability to express my ideas.
That's what I think it's about. So to that guy making the 1000th Linkinball Z video, that's awesome man. I hope it comes out exactly how you want it, and I hope you enjoy it and make more. But after that, it comes down to audience, and what audience are you looking for. Someone like myself doesn't really want to watch yet another one, but I'm sure someone does. Or maybe they made it for their friends, because they all thought it was cool. The video with the blocky compressed version of Sephorith from someone else's video, or the dancing Vash flashing in the corners may have a different objective, which would be to get all the fan boys/girls to scream and clap for their video at the AMV showing of their local con. Hey, if that's what you want, cool. Go for it. I hope you make more people cheer and show up to the AMV contest. I'll be the guy up front grumbling about your video.
Then you got someone like, Beowulf, the arteest
He makes videos to expand the artform
He doesn't really give a shit what you think about his stuff, though he loves you if you like it. That's not why he does it though, he does it for him. You'll see why when his big vid's released. He takes AMVs seriously, which is a good and bad thing. The audience for his kind of video would probably be another AMV creator. His videos aren't really fan favorite material, and he likes it that way.
Eh, I don't know where I'm going with this. I guess I'll just say a few more things. It's important to identify why you make AMVs, and what kind you like. As for "good" videos, I believe them to be ones that are good technically as well as conceptually. However, concept takes precedence over technical quality. The determination of good and bad videos is up to whichever audience you ask.

I run into this too. Apparently people think a video I made in about 5 hours (from the time I came up with the concept to the time I saved the finished product to my computer.) is about as good as a video that took me a week or 2 to make (after I had had the concept for a couple weeks before that.) I also purposely pick odd combos, just b/c I think it would be cool. The more odd the combo I pick, the less people like it. I don't care. I'm having fun. So some poeple get higher scores even though their vid isn't that good. So what?! That's their business. The scorers will get theirs in the end!

I guess you'll see that everywhere, to be honest. I see that on art sites as well, for instance - draw a [insert popular anime/char combo of the moment], and lots of people will be drawn to it and say it's great simply because it features their favorite char or whatever. It really just depends on preferences, and, I'd say, on a certain degree of... not sure, "maturity/experience" perhaps? Some will give top marks for these same reasons - because it's an anime they like, a song they like... Some will also give top marks because, well, they don't always know better, and haven't always really had the opportunity to compare with really good AMVs. Some will go past this and acknowledge both the merits and flaws, even if it's using footage from an anime they love. It all depends.
Anyway, the way I see it, aren't we here to make the vids we like first? It's not like we can sell them, become known in the professional world with them (as, well, it's not terribly legal, after all, using anime we didn't create and songs we didn't compose), and so on. If people don't like them, tough. If they like them, power to them. Even if the AMV next door using footage from the same anime has gotten better marks, as long as we like what we do, it's already some kind of reward... I think

I feel the same here, but like many have already said and posted I'm having a blast just making what I make(and yeah sometimes and could care lees what people think, but in order to get better at editing I have to keep an opened mind), some people have already put two of my vids on there top fav's, ..that truly makes my day(each and everyday), esecially seeing as I have been around since 2001, and only have 5 ops, 3 of those where from the op exchange form, not that thats bad, but like kajin_phoenixlord said, I had to try my best to milk(or aka pimp) my amv(sig) and get it out there so people could recognize it and get feedback from who liked or disliked it... anyhow, be satisfied(ashiteruSweetSurrender) with your 40 ops and keep on doing what you love best.. and don't let your probs(about amvs) get to ya.. your overall percentile tells me you doing something defintetly right.. and that your vids should be on the top star or 10 something...
so yeah, those are my 2 cents...
