Collge having a small Con with AM V's - can anyone help?

Post by TeamCanadia » Sat Oct 24, 2009 6:42 am

We are organizing a small anime convention on our campus in South Jersey for January 16th 2010. We are targeting teens and college students and think it will be small.
I have the facilities in the college so we want to show some AMV's. We will run a workshop on campus introducing the students to Animemusicvideos.org guides and running through how to put one together. Then they can show their creations at our con.

I have 2 questions...would any of you great editors would like to come and hold a panel on how you do what you do (AMV related!)?
I think everyone would love it!

The second question is could we show AMV's posted on a-m-v.org or do we need to get the owners permission?

Thank-you for answering!

Oh, you mean Rowan?

Gloucester County's about a two-hour drive from where I am, and I don't have a laptop with any editing software on it that I can bring along, but it's a possibility... any other New Jersey or Southeast Pennsylvania people want to collaborate on this?

As far as the second question, it's an unspoken rule around here that you should try to get the creator's permission first. If you can't get in contact with the creator (which often happens with older videos or videos by people who haven't been around in years), I don't think anyone will mind.

Thank-you for your encouraging reply!
Gloucester County College is a of couple miles from Rowan. It is a Community College.

I am so happy you are willing to help out. It will be fun! We are setting up a website, but right now it is just a Facebook Group: Gloucester County Anime Con

I appreciate you answering my questions about permissions. If I get some great editors like this, I am sure I will have enough!! Otherwise, can I just contact people on a-m-v.org somehow to ask if we can show their AMV's?

Sorry, it's just that I'm a graduate of The College of New Jersey, where it was always fashionable to bash Rowan -- and one of the names we had for them was in fact "Gloucester County Community College"; I had no idea the county actually had a separate community college...!
(I never thought I'd ever get the chance to make a Rowan joke here.)

Sure -- best would probably be e-mailing them at the addresses given in their user profiles, or sending them private messages through the forum's system.

You can use any of mine that you like.

I do tend towards overdone credits, so if you want I can give you megaupload links to versions without.

...............really? I hope that you meant to say that its a unspoken rule to ask to show someone's AMV in a panel. I'm the assistant director for Momocon's amv department, and we show over 30 hours of AMVs during the convention every single year. We even have the AMV rooms running overnight. And estimating that we show about 15 AMVs per hour, we would have to get permission for over 450 AMVs every year. That's just not possible. If its just to show the 5 or 10 AMVs that are shown during a hour long panel, then yes, I guess that it would definitely be common courtesy to at least make a serious attempt to track down the owner and get permission.

Oh and coincidentally, Momocon is also held on a college campus :D (Georgia Tech to be specific) And its currently the largest free convention in North America.

On another note, I actually plan to spend the holidays (Christmas and New Years) in East Orange and Newark New Jersey. But I don't think that I'll be able to extend my visit to the 16th though. :( Its too bad that this con wasn't around when I actually lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Making the trip from Atlanta is really expensive.

Thank-you KireBlue. Your con is MUCH bigger than we are planning - its looks great. I appreciate your encouraging words. Encourage your friends to come. We should have our website up next week. It looks like it will be relaxed and fun, and we even have some demo's and one guest! I can't believe it is coming together. Any advice you or any other AMVer's have would be appreciated. sglenn at gccnj.edu

Would anyone else like to come and help run a panel at our small convention in south Jersey? I really appreciate the notes I have been getting on my a-m-v.org email for tips on the Con. It is looking better and better! You have been very helpful. Also, many of you have offered to let us show your AMV's. The Swine flu last week make it hard to do much, but your response cheered me up! Thank-you!
