1 & 1/2 Kara no Kyokai+OSI videos for the price...

This is my first actual AMV in almost two years, so forgive me if I’m a bit rusty – I thought I’d jump right back into the deep end. The main motivation behind this video was to reflect the pacing and atmosphere of the Kara no Kyokai movies, which I always found really odd and much slower than people initially assume. It's pretty meandering and moody - so we have here this video to a moody progressive/industrial piece by OSI, a “project with band aspirations” in the words of its leaders Jim Matheos (Fates Warning) and Kevin Moore (Chroma Key). “Blood” is the title track of OSI’s just-released third album.

So, to quote the song, “it’s been a long time, I thought you’d get it”?
It’s not perfect and certainly isn’t to everyone’s taste, but it would definitely appeal to people with patience and a liking for pretty Kara no Kyokai footage. The editing is simple by most standards, although it's been a more thorough effort than most of my videos to date. And now I need to stop editing it and go back to work before it ruins my career

























But wait, that’s not all!

Actually when I started this project, I was originally going to use a completely different song, by the same band and from the same album. It ended not working as a full video , but I kept some of my sketches for that plan, and in the end cut it down to just a part of the song and just a small part of the story, which ended up working out rather well.




Basically, it’s a violent horror video about what happens to people that like rape
I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone under 18 due to nudity and violent content. That’s why it’s also not on local.

It’s an unfinished video, an outtake or sketch for all purposes, but has its good points. I only used the last 1/3 of the actual song, so don't be surprised about the odd cut. Took me about 7 hours to edit, but it’s much faster-paced than “Only Silence”, so whether you liked that one or not I encourage you to check it out. There's very little overlap in footage between the two.

Got Only Silence.
What to say about it...
...for starters, all those blurs, especially in the beginning, made my eyes go out of focus, which wasn't exactly nice. >_>
As for the rest, it's not as if it was bad edited, but I couldn't enjoy it neither. I'd say it's a case of a well edited video that just happens to not be my cup of tea, since I can't really exactly point out something bad about it besides the blurs, which weren't exactly a bad thing themselves.
I guess I'll rate it 3/5 for now, perhaps it might grow on me later on.

I watched Only Silence. As far as the atmosphere goes you nailed it, however, I really would've liked to have seen more cuts used and less crossfades/fadeouts to keep up with the song a little more. I think it would've greatly increased the impact and made the video overall more enjoyable. I did like it tho, probably give it a 3/5. Not bad, especially for you being pretty rusty.

Thanks! I think my obsession with fades and blurs bothers some people. More on this later, but I really wonder sometimes if it's just a personal thing - I tend to like blurs and fades because they correspond to how I 'feel' music, I guess.

And yeah, well-taken on the cup-of-tea thing. It's an indulgent video and I think your mileage here really depends on whether you can get into the sources and pacing. Which I'll be the first to admit is kind of weird. Thanks for watching though!

Awesome, I heard you liked the song quite a bit too, which is already one reason for me to be happy with the video. And yeah, the second one is a bit weird at the start, I agree - as I said, it's not really a complete video and the start is a bit arbitrary and odd. I just thought it was better to release something than release nothing with even a part of that song.

Thanks, but hmm, maybe you can expand on the cuts thing a little? I'm almost tempted to go back and see what it'd look like if I took out the fades. All my videos start out with cuts, and even this one was synched by pure cuts until late in the editing process when I started considering the 'feel' of the video more carefully, and since I always think of music as 'swells' rather than 'hits' of sound, I personally thought fades would fit better, especially since I was trying to emphasize mood rather than rhythm.

That said, I heard from many editors I respect now that one of the 'tricks' to good editing is using cuts rather than fades. I totally know what's good about cuts, but it always made me wonder what's wrong with fades... is this sort of just commonly-held wisdom or more of a subjective preference, I wonder? I always found cuts to be useful in purely action- or comedy-oriented editing, but the cuts and [mirko's dreaded] blurs are something I err on the side of when it comes to trying to go for mood over everything else.

Would be a good discussion for GAMV maybe

The part between 3:57 and 4:17 in Only Silence is deliciously synched! It's actiony but still kind of subtle, and it doesn't throw off the pacing of the whole video.
I've only ever seen the first movie, and this make me curious again.

... I'm still kinda afraid to watch the other one >__>

Only Silence. I really really love the slower pacing in this. I like that you're giving us time to absorb what is going on and get the whole mood together. People don't seem to do that enough these days, freakin ADD. Also the music is excellent and matches the sauce very well. Indeed it puts me in the same kind of "mood" that CKY does, I freakin love the atmosphere of this vid. (also thanks for turning me on to this band, I'm going to give the whole album a listen through tomorrow at work)

Price in Blood. Disturbing, makes me go ._. Though I was all FUCKYES at around 1:30 or so.
