Some AMV research.
I'm trying to figure out exactly what is up with these people over at youtube(I know, know one wants to talk about this and all, so either add your ibl or some actual criticism bl)
These videos get highly rated like some great movie production, always averaging out 4/5 stars, always. If I watch an amv with naruto(key word here) it's going to have a 4/5 at least 90% of the time guaranteed.
What is going on here!? I'm sick of it, I'm loosing hope in humanity if this crap is stimulating to anyone. The most it should do is put you to sleep or give you feelings of disgust on how horrible these were made.. if people care about this topic AT ALL, which I don't think is going to happen, I'll try to collect a good amount of examples. No point posting a tone of videos, it's reputation if no one really cares, since the only reason I care to give this info is to have some discussion about them and sh*t.
I personally think it goes like this. This is what's going on in their heads.
Examples of ands and ors.. or something
"Oh my god, that art is awesome! 5 stars!"
"Naruto!? Awesome music!? OMGBBQ 5 stars!"
lot's of action=5stars
smooth animation, some decent animation=5 stars
That's the way I look at it. I don't think that they consider the actual editing if you compare it to how much they consider the music and the anime.
Here is an example.. I have hundreds more I could find.. I don't care to look at all, if this gets the point across or gets u curious I may look but this should do..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2RqChmJbjM
4/5 stars..
comments..
"Its awesome! I love the music!"
"awesome!!! i love the part when ino and sakura were fighting!!!! it matched the beat. if there were 10 starz, i would give u a 10!!!!"
This one is funny.
"Yo! This is nice video!
Try ignoring negitive comments!
thanks for sharing this video!"
Why not just say "try ignoring criticism." If you think you're good when you suck, how in the hell are you suppose to improve?
"the ending fucked it up for me, i watched it for "Sakura + Naruto" not sasuke" honestly though, the whole video fed it up for me.
"awesome vid. i really like this parring! and the song!"
__________
So what is ur opinions on this? Wasting my time here writing pointless batter? I thought so..

unlike here where everyone is FORCED to give stars on local downloads, and can only give a star rating once (even though you can change it, you can only give the rating once)
over at the tube site you have the option of giving stars or not giving stars....
if you look at the #of stars to the # of "views" there will be more than likely a drastic difference.... because not everyone is going to give a star rating...
(which is why so many people over there put "pls rate and comment" in their video descriptions)
4 our of 5 stars for that vid - 344 ratings
Views: 46,855
Favorited: 294 times
also back in May when this was released (or uploaded) you could rate the video every time you visited the video page, so they could have watched it several times and rated it themselves, they could have also got friends to rate it for them....
Now they block your ip from rating it again (or 1 rating per ip)
either way best i can say is that your also probably right in some aspects the whole "song i like + anime i like + pairing i like or character i like = 5 stars no matter how well edited it is"
or they could be completely amazed by all the long crossfades from WMM...

3 reasons:
1) When people with very small minds are shown something outside of their scope for the first time they go crazy and automatically think it's good.
2) People get their friends to write over-the-top comments. (hey, this happens here too)
3) Users can screen their comments and delete all but the best ones.

Yeah, that's about right. It's also a major driving force here, too (not on forum but on the main site at large). I've gotten comments and opinions on videos of mine that completely suck and I say in the description or my profile not to review or comment on because its not worth it, that I threw together in an afternoon using VirtualDub (these date from over 3 years ago), and people still say they're good - they don't get specific, they just say stuff similar to the hosatchel comments.

I think it's just a different of fans. Why are you watching amvs?
We have the same thing here if you compare the forum to the site as a whole. In the forum editing is more important than how much you like the music, the anime, and the combination. For most anime fans it's the anime and the music that matter, with the editing only being important in rare cases. Thats why videos with wild noticeable effects do so well when they use popular anime+music - those anime fans actually notice the editing.
I don't think most casual amv watchers, anime fans, notice or care about editing. They're doing it to see their favorite anime footage set to an enjoyable song. Unless the editing is really tight or wild, it's not going to stand out over the impression of "that song was perfect for those two" or "that song was made for that fight". It's the same reason newbs enjoy watching amvs more than critics - they watch for different reasons. It's easier for anime fans to find amvs with anime+song they like, than it is for critics to find amvs with editing they approve of (and anime+song they like).

Ima take a shot in the dark that the people on youtube are GENERALLY much younger than the crowd that is on the org... (dont get me wrong we got the youngin's here too..) I get friended by mostly 12-14 yearolds with the occasional older teen and early 20s... most of my friends here are older (with a few exceptions, i mean two exceptions)
ps. younger doesnt necessairly mean bad, it just means less experienced, so alot of this "AMV Stuff" is really really new to them.
theres also a larger audience there.
they are also less technical minded. its alot easier to fill out a bit of info, select the file and press the upload button there than it is to work the FTP and info pages here @_@
people in general also tend to be amazed at what they cannot do...
when i was even more newb than i am now (@_@) i used to be amazed by certain things, effects and whatnot that i couldnt do (stuff like flashing and pulsing, easy stuff right?) but i didnt know how to do it so i was amazed by it... (zomg panning!!) so alot of the people there could possibly be amazed by simple things that others are doing that they dont know how to do. (just getting to the "i can make a video" stage can be amazing to some people, especially the ones who dont know how to do it, but arent particularly interested in learning themselves)
they also like to create "support groups" for themselves... over there, they tend to go in circles telling each other how great they are... its pretty rare to find someone on the tube that will accept crit. most will get mad at you and delete your comments... (in some rare cases ive seen some gather a bunch of groupie friends up to make nasty comments on your vids, if you have vids)
plus, I dont know how many times i've heard "i cant see the video, but the song is nice" because someone doesnt have XVID installed on their computer... at the tube, all you need is flash player. all the videos are in the same format so theres no need to worry about installing anything more than flash... here you get all sorts of stuff... .avis in all kinds of codecs, mp4s, mpeg, mpg, mov, rm, ive even seen vob @_@ wmv... ect...

Addendum-
I have a recent video I uploaded to That Site and this site, Sleepless. It gets the same feedback in QCs here as it does in comments over there. That's an example of how you find the same people on both sites. I see that a lot.
Don't forget that this forum only represents a tiny fraction of the amv fans on this site. Mostly the critics. They're not watching amvs for the same reasons you are, and they outnumber you. Way of the world.

I think everyone is right here. Why though do I find Naruto videos here with a lot lower ratings than over at youtube? 4 stars are rare, very rare here, over there 90% of the Naruto AMVs have 4 stars. This is where I'm baffled. Isn't this site full of purely anime fans? That site has a bunch of random people who run into these AMVs, I'm sure the reaction would be worse than when I try to sit random friends/family to watch anime with me. I'd expect thoughts like "what the fuck is this crap?"
