To start with, I better say I'm using a mac. Now that that's out of the way...
When I first joined the site, I could download AMVs to my desktop, no problem. After a while, it stopped downloading them to my desktop and either loaded them in a safari browser window (with no way to save them to my desktop) or opened in the Windows Media Player (again with no way to save them.) This has, I'm sad to say, put a major damper on my downloading joys.
Does anyone have any ideas what's up, or how to fix it?

Try opening windows media player, going to 'tools' and 'options' and unchecking the box next to 'connect to the internet'. You can also go to the 'files' section and disable the file type you're trying to download (avi, wmv, mpg, etc). Another choice is to open the folder where you saved the videos before, right-clicking one of the videos, and going to 'open with' - pick anything *but* windows media player. Still another option is to go to the tab that handles streaming media and uncheck all the boxes so wmp won't stream anything (you'll want to re-check them if you find a file you want to stream later, though).
You can save the file to any folder you want and then open it in wmp - you don't want to try streaming videos that are on local. It won't work. I don't know what this safari browser is, but if you're using something other than internet explorer, you might as well get opera or firefox - www.opera.com is free and usually avoids this problem altogether. You don't have to switch to it, just use it for downloading local files and then go back to whatever browser you're most comfortable with.

To the first, I've tried uninstalling Media Player, it didn't work.
To the second, I'm a Mac user. Foxfire or whatever the other one is is not compatible with my computer.
Now, Window's Media Player works a little differently on macs. You'd really have to be a mac user to understand, I think, but I thank you both for the suggestions.

Are you sure Firefox doesn't work on a mac? The Mozilla site has a version listed for "Mac OS X" if you didn't try it. Link:
http://www.mozilla.org/download.html
Another link that popped up for firefox mac after a google search:
http://downloads.vnunet.com/download/br ... 32837.html
I've never used firefox myself, but if it says it works on a Mac (as well as windows), it can't hurt to try.
