Anime release vs. idea yet to be done

Post by Hax » Sat May 07, 2005 10:06 pm

I face a moral dilema vs time dilema. As I write this, there are 663 AMVs to an anime I have a concept for. As of right now, less than 25% of the series has been released in the US on DVD. The concept I have, no offense, fits this particular series insanely well. Its only a matter of time before someone ele thinks of it.

So what do I do? Given both the nature of the series and the amv, the currently available footage just won't do. The AMV requires a very specific type of scene, dispersed throught the series. Do I use downloaded footage? I'm really against this, and so is AMV. Do I claim to have made the video, wait, make it, and then make it available for download? That's against AMV's rules as well. Do I sit on my ass and wait for someone else to get the idea but ruin the concept? I'd really rather not :(. I ask you - what should I do?

I intentionally haven't mentioned the concept here, because I know there are some lowlifes that would steal it, and the type that would steal it would have no trouble using poorly subtitles fansubs to get the job done.
AMVs that I have made:
Berserk - The Fight Must Go On - Drama, Action, Violent, Story
Teenage Cowboy Bebop Turtles(TCBT) - Fun, Trailer, Parody

Well, there are always R2 DVDs if you really want to stick to your guns.

On another note, you'd be surprised what kind of quality you can get from fansubs if you clean and crop them correctly.

And if someone uses your idea before you get a chance to make your video, then you can either attempt to make a better video, or you can add a twist onto your already thought of concept :)

That's an issue for me, especially if I think I came up with something original. I usually spend a few hours researching the site to see if someone else had already been there done that. However, after spending some time super searching, it seems that a lot of my concepts for a specific anime have already been attempted at one time or another (granted some not as well as I would have expected). I know it's possible to improve on it or make a twist but the original excitement for the project has lost some of it's edge at that point.

In either case, it seems that Hax has his idea already scripted out that if he finds that someone else has created something similar it would be devastating. Even though he could put a twist on it, it wouldn't be the same idea he thought of in the beginning and I think that always takes some steam away from a potential project.

I agree with Bashar and see if you can score R2 DVDs if possible.

personal motivation issues aside, the basic video concept is a one trick pony, but oh what a trick. So even if its done poorly first, the joke is ruined. I haven't gone through every single video made with this anime, but I have searched fairly thoroughly and it hasn't turned up yet. Lik eI said...it could only be a matter of time.

As far as scripting the video goes, I haven't found the exact version of the audio track I want, but the basic idea is all set. Like I said before the type of scene required is specific, so there isn't much in the way of planning.

If its a one-trick pony, it sounds perfect for AMV Hell

Chances are, if the video was done before and was done porly, it was done by an editor who has proven themselves to be bad in the past, so how many people do you think would have seen it?

On another note, Who cares if it has been done before!?! Do this for yourself first, your fans (if you hapen to have those) second, and for everybody else last. As long as the concept hasn't been done 500 times before, you're okay. Remember, you have a step up over most of the people who might have done the same video in that your willingness to go out and determine if the video had been done says somethign about your dedication... or I might be completely off base with this.. idk...

ya know, this is the kind of thing that could definately show up in amvhell, you don't happen to have fma dvds, do ya

Bashar, for a lot of concepts, ya, you're right. If you had a similar idea, but a different vision or work ethic, then yes it could work. In this case, the song and the scenes are the joke, there's really nothing more. That's not to say I don't plan on working hard on it to make it good ^^
