i was just watching episode 18 of the Eva anime and i realized something

in both the anime and the manga, Shinji's eva is used to destroy the alien-invaded eva unit 03 piloted by Suzuhara (toji) by way of the dummy system

but the difference is that in the anime, toji survives and then for some reason gets access to shinji's sub-conscience and is able to witness Shinji go through one of his mind-trips
BTW wrote:  is that what the whole train symbolizes?! the fact that Toji was watching from a seperate cart in the train, it allowed him to connect through to Shinji, does that mean that we all have our own train carts and that we are able to look into another's cart through whatever circumstances?!... we have our individuality, but still we are all connected!!... or maybe i've just watched too much eva, heh heh
but in the manga, Toji dies, this sets up another scene, in episode 19, Kaji helps Shinji make the decision to go back to Nerv and help his everyone fight the angel, but in the manga, Kaji takes Shinji away to a safe location and then he talks to shinji about his past... but Kaji talks about how he traded the life of his brother and his friends in order to survive, he uses the analogy of Shinji not doing anything to prevent Toji's death to convince Shinji to return

my point is, would anyone consider Kaji's added past to be filler?

in the anime, his family-history is never addressed, so we can assume it's not important, but i guess we can't assume he was an only child can we?

it's never said he has a brother that he sacrificed for his own survival, but i think it works really well and gives the show yet another good piece of philosophy to work with

so does anyone prefer either case? anime vs manga for this situation

Personally I think filler is a term used about %900 too frequently, I wouldn't really consider it filler.

As for this part of the manga VS the anime, I don't have that particular volume of the manga, but from the sound of it I'd have to choose the anime. The anime has the watering the melons and Shinji watching the carnage from there, it makes it more "meaningful" to me. But it's no suprise that I'd pick the anime over the manga...

yeah, i think i might lean towards the anime myself, even though it may flesh out Kaji a bit more than the anime did, it takes up a lot more time to drag Shinji out to some location when he could have just told Shinji

'Hey.. HEYY! YOU SEE WHAT I'M DOING?! I'M FREAKIN' WATERING MELONS! I DON'T SEE YOU DOING ANYTHING! EH?! GO-ON! CRY SOME MORE! THAT'S WHAT YOU, LIKE ISN'T IT?!
[sprays shinji with hose]
YOU DON'T LIKE IT?! THEN LEEEAVE!! GO DO SOMETHING USEFUL!!'
[shinji runs to confront angel with no found determination]

Yeah, and more than a year after the release of Volume 7, Volume 8 is FINALLY out... with a new packaging that they're also converting the older volumes to (just like with Fushigi Yuugi and some of Viz's other titles).

It's stuff like Kaji's backstory that causes me to actually like the manga better than the anime, at least as far as its story is concerned. In general, we get to see a lot more of what the characters are thinking. And Volume 8, fortunately, is no exception to that trend.

Though after getting a glimpse of Kaoru at the end of volume 7, he's nowhere to be found in 8. But oh well. :)

Yeah there was a bit of difference in the anime series and the manga series. Its been a while since ive read the manga so i cant realy compare the two without being to sure and i wouldnt want to make a judgement if i dont have the facts straight. But i kno for a fact that from wat i remeber, there was a slight difference in that part of the anime series. Ill have to look into it next time i goto the book store. But for now, sleep is calling me ... :|

duuuuude, i was wondering about that change they did!

i also have the regular manga that came first (collector's editon), but now with the new packaging, i don't even know if they'll have the same material or not

i'm assuming the chapters are the same, but do you know if the extra stuff at the end of the volume will still be the same as it was going to be? basically is there any difference between the Collector's Edition they had before and the new ones?

I'm thinking the only difference is the packaging (and maybe the layout of the bios and title pages and the rest of the stuff in the beginning), but I can't be sure, since the only other volume I saw in the new style was volume 1.
