Getting around DNS problems
This is what happened. I was running an Apache server out of the closet of my dorm room. I had my college IP registered directly as my domain. I had the site up for about three months when I received a phone call from the network admin. He basically said, “Son, you can’t have your IP registered as your own domain. I don’t care about the server, you just have to unregister the domain.” So this is where I am right now.
This brings me to this question. Is there any way that I could register my domain in a round about way so that I don’t directly register it? For example, isn’t it possible to link my IP to a sub-domain of someone else and then register my domain to that sub-domain?
If anyone knows how I could get around this I would really appreciate the input.

Sorry about that.Well, this isn't exactly video software...
Thanks nailz1000. I didn't think of that. The only question I have now is where will the pointer page be stored so that I can register my domain to that address?[/quote]if you can see the IP from the internet as its own server, why don't you just set up a domain and use a pointer page?

Check with CIS and see if they can register you under the university. That's what we do here

if your friend has a domain with subdomain capabilities, have him register your domain, have his host set up a pointer page to his subdomian set up for you, and have a pointer page at the subdomain pointed to your IP. Alas, in theory it'd work, though I've never done it. dreamhost will do it for you.
