Getting around DNS problems

Post by chuckg31 » Thu Nov 20, 2003 2:44 am

This is what happened. I was running an Apache server out of the closet of my dorm room. I had my college IP registered directly as my domain. I had the site up for about three months when I received a phone call from the network admin. He basically said, “Son, you can’t have your IP registered as your own domain. I don’t care about the server, you just have to unregister the domain.” So this is where I am right now.

This brings me to this question. Is there any way that I could register my domain in a round about way so that I don’t directly register it? For example, isn’t it possible to link my IP to a sub-domain of someone else and then register my domain to that sub-domain?
If anyone knows how I could get around this I would really appreciate the input.

Well, this isn't exactly video software... quite frankly, your roundabout idea doesn't sound feasable. In the morning I have to go to work in CMS, I'll ask the permanent staff if they can think of anything...

if you can see the IP from the internet as its own server, why don't you just set up a domain and use a pointer page? Seems pretty simple to me.

Sorry about that.

Thanks nailz1000. I didn't think of that. The only question I have now is where will the pointer page be stored so that I can register my domain to that address?[/quote]

Check with CIS and see if they can register you under the university. That's what we do here

I see you have some ferns now, too.

Nice ferns there, Jon

(Sorry I can't be useful here, but I do like jon's lilies and ferns)

if your friend has a domain with subdomain capabilities, have him register your domain, have his host set up a pointer page to his subdomian set up for you, and have a pointer page at the subdomain pointed to your IP. Alas, in theory it'd work, though I've never done it. dreamhost will do it for you.
