I finally got my freakin' connection back

Post by Kegger007 » Sat Aug 16, 2003 6:43 pm

It's about time. I'm sure that by now there have been a billion posts about the blackout, but I have just recently got my internet connection back! Even though we got power back on Friday, we've had this energy conservation thing in effect and I my interent connection wouldn't work, which was a huge bone of contention for me with my internet company. And now that I finally have it back, I've missed all of the posts in the last couple of days, so I've got a lot of reading to do!

P.S. I'm typing this in the dark so I can save energy while I use my cpmputer, which is considered non-essential to the energy conservationalists.

Were you scared of the dark :lol:
Why do we try to keep our sanity when losing it is so much more fun?

Heh, actually it was kinda fun at night, being able to actually see stars while in the city. Coincidentally there was a meteor shower that night, so we got an unbostructed view of the shooting stars.

Okay, I've been hearing about this blackout all day. When did it happen? Where, why? :? Was it some huge accident that I just didn't hear about? I don't get television, or the newspaper, so I'm in the dark (bad pun, sorry) as far as what people are talking about. Would you mind educating me? ^_^;;

Heh Ari it was pretty damn big! It affected as far west in the US as Chicago and Detroit, and continued down the eastern sea board to Georgia. It reached up into Canada as far east as Ottawa I believe, and continued up near Thunder Bay in the north. A total of approximately 50 million people were without power for about a day ( 2-3 for some unfortunate people).

While the blame was being pointed either way (Canada pointed to a Manhattan generator, then Mayor Pataki of NY pointed the finger at Canada, you know how it is), the cause was an overload at one grid somewhere in either the US or Canada (I believe the Manhattan theory myself). The power flowing south ended up reversing flows and as one grid went down, the power took out subsidiary grids and lines as it traveled north. It took about 9 seconds for the surge to travel all acorss the eastern US and Southern Ontario.

So there you have it Ari, the story as presented by the one known as Kegger. I'm pretty sure it's acurate, but open to debate. It's gonna take months to determine the actual cause, and we are experiencing rotating blackouts for the next few days while they test and re-test the power grids.

Peace!

Ah so there was someone aside from me from the org who lost power. I didn't have power for about 30 hours. It was so boring... and I'm usually up till 2 or 4am so once it got dark I just kinda layed there and stared at the ceiling in my house thinking about how my life sucked and I was never gonna get a girlfriend... all because power was out and I had nothing to occupy my thoughts. I would have drove around or something but police were out patrolling cause here in michigan they were enforcing a curfew(sp?) to prevent looting(Darn detroiters ruining things for the rest of us).

Heh, I know. I usually watch the simpsons on all the late night channels, but I couldn't so I was really bored as well. I ended up sleeping but it was hard because the house was hot due to the lack of air conditioning!

Thank you *very* much for the explanation. ^_^ I hate not knowing what people are talking about - and something this big...it's just sad not to have heard about it. I need to get out more. ^_^;;
