It's now official (Tenchi GXP liscensing)

Post by Garylisk » Tue May 20, 2003 4:42 am

As of Saturday at Acen, it is OFFICIALLY announced. FUNimation has the rights to the north american release of "Tenchi Muyo! GXP" which aired last spring in Japan.

What I have heard is that they showed the opening and ending credits at the panel at ACen, and said that they are trying to get the original voice actors for episode 17 (Where the Tenchi OVA cast makes an appearance.)

FUNimation's liscensing of this show has been rumored for a while now, but it had never been officially announced until now.

There is no word on a release date.

From what I understand and I could be wrong, but the old cast only makes IIRC one guest appearance. Except for Tenchi almost all of the cast is new.

I will miss Ryoko...sniff...sniff

Argh. I am sick and fucking tired of random Funimation bashers. The facts are:

1. Dragonball is a fucked up property. However, the subtitled version is FINE. No edits, no changes. If you don't like the changes in the dub, watch the original uncut version. It took a shitload of negotiations with Toei Japan to get the original Japanese tracks (R1 subbed DBZ came out WAY before the Japanese R2 sets).

2. Yu Yu Hakusho is being released just fine. Yes the episode counts leave a little to be desired, but if you wait for the box sets it's a damn cheap release ($90 for 7 volumes? Pretty damn good for R1).

3. Blue Gender was price pointed lower than normal and was a great release. The dub had no music edits, the subs were well translated, and the video quality is on par with the R2 LD release, if not the R2 DVD release (sorry, been about 3 years since I've seen R2 DVD but LD 1 is on my shelf). No problems here.

4. Fruits Basket is being released on four discs and I have yet to hear of ANY problems. The dub is supposed to be great and again, no problems.

THEREFORE

FUNimation has come a long way since the early days. They've shown that they do care about the fans by putting out bilingual uncut DVDs, alternate angles for those who want to see the kanji credits/original logos/etc., speedy price-down boxsets, quality voice acting, and all the other things you expect from an R1 anime company. The only real gripe I hear anymore is that for most titles they're still using DVD-5 for four episode discs which causes a slight bitrate crunch, but proper authoring (see Macross) can work around that.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing FUNimation's release of One Piece and hope that they find a way to pick up Detective Conan. If nothing else they've shown that they are capable of seeing a long (100+ episode) series through to the end. Just remember, it could always be ADV who will sit on it for two years before starting production. Tenchi GXP and One Piece were only announced last AX (or was it AXNY?) and both are already in Production (GXP is in scripting, OP is being dubbed). Not bad IMHO.

First of all, YuYu Hakusho is dubbed by 4Kids Entertainment, FUNi just distributes it.
I have not watched any Blue Gender from them, so I wouldn't know about that.
The Fruits Basket dub has a 50/50 split of good and bad voices IMO, and on the technical side, it's very badly done. There's lots of technical problems. Basically, for Furuba, they did a sloppy rush job.

If they do that with GXP, I will be very upset.

And yes, the original cast only makes an appearance in episode 17. Also, in a few episodes previous to episode 17, there are a couple appearances by Ryo-Ohki, and Washu in a flashback. Later, there is also an appearance by Azusa, Misaki, and Funaho.

Other than that, it's new characters. The main character is Seina, and his supporting cast is (Of course) a harem of women who all want him ;) (Amane, Kiriko, Ryoko Balta, Neeju, Gokuren, Hakuren, Suiren, Karen.) Also, a new cabbit (Fuku), Aeka and Sasami's grandmother (Seto, AKA Jurai's Demon Princess (Oni-hime)), and we can't forget the pink haired one! (Seiryo)

Umm... Yu Yu is indeed dubbed by FUNi. Hell, Justin Cook (ADR Director; FUNi) plays Yuusuke.

I think the "Fruits Basket" DVDs are phenomenal... I have NO idea what technical problems you're talking about. The Furuba discs are constantly getting rave reviews over on www.AnimeOnDVD.com, as well.

FUNimation's just announced that they'll be using an original Pioneer or ADV cast for one of the "Sakura Wars" OVAs... I wouldn't be surprised if they, for the original Tenchi cast in that episode, bought the original cast for the episode to reprise their roles...
