Most people have never heard of the series, let alone actually watched some of it. The ones who've seen it all are rare and mostly found on tenipuri forums and webrings. They're also mostly girls, as you noted yourself. It takes some dedication to get ahold of it right now. ^_^;

The anime series has only recently been licensed - that old and they're just now licensing it. Wait till it hits the states and it should get a nice following of groupies. They're just now making the animated ovas (nationals like the manga, pretending the American thing never happened). Wait a year or two. If amvs are still around, the current tenipuri vids will be classic.
