Well it is, and it isn't...

You see...basically, the creator of Wing (in the third biggest mistake in the legacy of Gundam*) felt that, since he was unable to convincingly depict romantic relationships for the characters, and, since the yaoi/hetero crowds were both drawing to it, the guy felt it would be a smart move to leave their sexualities neutral. That's right, he decided he didn't want to give them sexualities and let the audiences make their decisions as they see fit. (Truth be told, I think it was a pretty cheap move from a lazy director, but that's just me.)
So in a way, if you want to interpret it as yaoi, there's nothing stopping you from doing so.
(Personally, I don't see them as gay...but then again, yaoi's never been my cup of joe, so that's just personal opinion)
(That's the one thing I never liked about Wing...the creator leaves WAY too many elements up to interpretation....in the long run, EoE was a more comprehendible view than Wing)...but I digress from my rambling

I know AzuManga Dioah isn't Yuri, I said 'Closest thing' meaning not quite although that girl was harbouring some pretty disturbing ideas for someone her age.

And I know Kawou wasn't really gay but I had a fun time convincing my friend who idolizes and Shinji up until the point of which he identifies himself as a Shinji preincarnaite type of thing. (I know some pretty weird peoples)

It amused me to convince him him Shinji was gay. However soon after my friend 'came out the closet himself' (I've always pondered if I had a part in that)

As for Homophobics, the shorter the town the more the homophobic. OH, and trust me mate, talking about private business (ie your own sexual gratification) should remain private. A mate of mine decided its good to talk about that sort of thing and was labels as a homosexual and before long had a range of being beating on him.
