A couple weeks back, arigatomina posts 'Dark Half,' a fan-animated video. It was an uncommon concept, had overused music, and the editing was solid. Within the first day, it gets more replies than 'Step Inside' does during its entire run.

Arigatominas vid is actually one of the cases in which the title got my interest because it said fan-animated. It is a little bit unlucky exampel, because Ari is a well known editor with good reputation. But I'm sure I'd downloaded it too if an unknown editor had announced it.

What does it take for an unknown to get noticed? Is the indication of the anime and music in the title enough?

It depends. If I'm interested in it yes, other way not.

if most of you don't watch videos to anime you don't know, then can I assume that you read anime magazines or watch TV promos (or something of the like) in order to see new ones?

I watch anime if they are aired. I don't watch AMV with unknown anime for two reasons:
1.) I could spoiler me something, even if marked "non spoiler". Maybe the editor simply forgot?
2.) How should I judge on the vid? I don't know anything about the show, so can I really understand it? Do I get it into right context?

If I posted a video there, who would take a chance on me?

If I would be in your place, I wouldn't mind it that much. Why not doing it how you like it? If you make a title and a post that you would read, that you would reply to, why shouldn't there be people out there who think the same?

The videos were both great and worth the download, but MXR got the shaft. To me, the only thing that made ari's video more popular was her status on the site.

Oi. It got a lot of posts, but that doesn't mean it was popular. It was flame-bait posted by someone who doesn't invite public flames. So it got funny responses instead.

It takes a few friends and good skills - once the friends have posted raving about the video, others will click to see what's up and - if the skills are there - they'll remember the creator in the future. I think this is what happened with 'Whisper of the Beast'. Who actually had heard of the group before watching that video? The few people who originally posted. The rest of us responded to see what was going on.

As far as getting your name known, I did it the round-about way, giving reviews to new members religiously, responding to every new amv announcement just so I could find other 'newbs' like myself. After a while, those people started doing the same to my threads. If you're trying to get the attention of the old-timers, I think you need to participate in cons or follow their announcements so they'll remember your name and get curious about you.

As for new anime - I don't like watching new anime. I have a few editors I follow (off the forums) who have the magical ability of making me interested in anime I've never heard of. Aside from them, I don't go out of my way to find new anime. I've watched a lot of anime in my free review threads, and not one of them made me want to seek vids out for that anime. Take Eva, or Lain, or Bebop, or a dozen popular 'commonly known' anime - I've never seen any of them. But I've seen enough videos for them to know I'm not that interested. I'll watch an amv to an unknown anime if the creator asks me to, but I don't go out of my way for it.

Out of curiosity, my third point is this: who here, besides myself, is willing to take chances on new or unknown creators?

I am. I just don't have the motivation to try it these days. There's too many new people posting, I'd never keep up. If I can't do everything, I don't do anything.

What DOES it take? Good question.

While I agree with some points here and there I'd like to point out my personal beef in finding a video worthy enough to blow my bandwidth limit on:

Video Comments: The problem with most video comments and even in the AMV Announcements is that they come off as incredibly pretentious. Why do I want to read about how "this is my <insert number> amv" and "this is my best work to date"? Of course I feel on the AMV Announcements board that it should just be enough for the editor to say what song and anime they used in the amv and say "thanks for taking the time to watch it". Another problem is with most video comments is that they tell what the editor is trying to say as SuperFusion pointed out. I'd much rather prefer the person watching the video to make their own damn mind on what the video, just takes the fun out of it if the editor just say "THIS IS THE POINT OF MY AMV". The final problem would be editors explaining the "making of" which pretty much what makes most video comments appear to long. If I was interesting in the history, how you did a certain effect or if I can give you a hang job then I'll email you. Otherwise, it's just a waste of space.

I am guilty of that. What kind of bs is that? Just because an editor doesn't have much to say about the video does not translate into a bad amv all the time. What can a person really say about their amv that's interesting? Do people want a step by step process on how I did a certain effect? My struggles, my personal real life problem I had to overcome to make this video or do they want me to fucking hold their hand and tell them what the point of the video is? I think the viewer is better than that to deserve that type of bs.

Good question, but rather should they really care about being noticed? If they really care about amvs from being beyond a "hobby", they should just release it and not care what others think than expect a blowjob.

Depends on my mood really. Do I want to take a chance on a video that has the potential to be somewhat decent (keyword) or do I really want to add another name to my hate list?
