I'm with ingow, I actually find metal rather relaxing, whether it's power metal, nu metal, or death metal, I am able to find it relaxing. There is a band I listen to called "waking the cadaver" (Which are progressive death by genre) wherein the Singer makes Gutteral sounds, but these sounds keep a rythym, and so do the instruments...so while he may not be saying anything most of the time, it can be more or less the same as if he were.
But like I said, it's all opinion. You think most metal sucks, and I'd prolly think that what you listen to is complete shit to (vivaldi), but it doesn't matter.
You comparing the subjectivity of music to the subjectivity of AMVs doesn't really work... since there ARE some standards like good synch or story or whatever that make an amv good, whereas music has no general things that make it "good", because it all depends on what the listener thinks of as good. This is true for AMVs... but generally not nearly is much.
Also, lawl at "Screamo deathmetal".

You're coming off as an uneducated moron. "Screamo Death Metal" doesn't exist. Calling it that is a largely discrediting to anything that you can or will say.Vivaldi wrote: Now that I've said that, let me redact my previous statement, screamo deathmetal is music. I'd contend that it's very bad music, in the technical sense. With almost no tonality and weak rhythm. relying simply on volume and shock value for to put the body in an aggresive and adrenaline inducing state. Which is why people like it. That's not subjective as the only point of disscusion is truth of statement and facts I missed\wasn't aware of. The subjective part comes in when I say "it sounds awful"
Screamo is an [even shittier] offshoot of modern hardcore punk. Death metal is a more extreme offshoot of 1980s Thrash Metal, such as Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax.
Death Metal comes in a variety of... Flavors, sub-sub-Genres, I guess you could call them. Progressive, Technical, Melodic, and Brutal are the ways I define them personally, though you may see different names for different things, and they overlap often times.
Technical Death Metal, such as Atheist, Cynic, and Death, originated in Florida in the late eighties and early nineties. By and large, the musicians in these bands were thinking "let's combine the intensity of thrash like Slayer with the technical knowhow and high concept ideas of Progressive rock (such as Rush, Yes, and King Crimson, all of which have jazz influences, as well)" and out popped a rather cool form of music. Progressive Death Metal, such as Opeth, also came from similar concepts. Progressive Death Metal also draws on clean vocals to sometimes give a contrast against the more harsh things that happen in songs.
Melodic Death Metal was born in Sweden (Gothenburg), and it's called Melodic for a reason. While it still has the sort of "signature" growls that developed out of more aggressive thrash, it also has a lot of focus on melodic guitar lines and the occasional use of Keyboards. A few good examples are Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth, and Raintime. Melodic death metal bands also use clean vocals from time to time.
Brutal Death Metal is the "louder" form, but it's also a lot more complex than it may first seem to the casual listener. There's a LOT going on in the drums, guitars, and bass. I'm still not a huge fan myself, but I like some stuff, like Decapitated and Nile. There's also some Lovecraftian themes in this form, as in there is in most forms of metal, so it's not simply "BRUTALDEATHGORE".
And there's a lot more to metal than just Death Metal. Power Metal (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray), Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Ayreon, Symphony X), Black Metal (Emperor, Arcturus, Enslaved) (some people might not be able to differentiate this from Death Metal, but there are plenty of differences), Thrash Metal, Classic Heavy Metal (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden), Folk/Viking Metal (Tyr, Turisas, Ensiferum), and many others.
P.S. Were Vivaldi alive today, he'd probably be in a Metal Band. Same goes for most Classical composers, Wagner, Bach and Beethoven in particular. A lot of Metal draws off classical music for influence.

I can already tell we'll never see eye to eye on the subjectivity of music, I guess we'll just leave it in the ironicly subjecive view of to each his own.
I would like to respond to a few points in the last post.
Pardon my ignorence of the vast array of loosly defined death metal genres. I fail to see how that makes me an "uneducated moron", maybe more like "not completely sub-culture savy?" I have a decent enough knowledge of music to make my case, whether I know the proper metalhead terms or not. It was quite obvious what I was getting at, so the fact that you decided to split hairs over it seems quite pedantic and somewhat spiteful.
Also, I should note that I do listen to metal, I was refering specificly to deathmetal. I should like to think I can at least diferentiate that much. From your short compendium, I'd say my ire was directed at brutal metal. And while I'd say that when you listen to it, you can tell there's much more complexity to it then someone banging their heads in an instrument\soundboard, the fact that it takes a while to tell doesn't really bode well for me.
And if Vivaldi were alive today, I'd think there's genres with much higher classical influence then deathmetal he'd like to get into.

Satch MEP? Count me right the fuck in.Mr Pilkington wrote:Am I just old-school or does anyone else define metal as someone who actually plays musical instrument in a musical way. Three chords or pounding on the D, A, & E stings as fast as possible.
That's it I am starting a Satriani MEP.

@Vivaldi:
I've never listened to Merzhow and for the most part doubt Nerdstrudel's taste in anything, so I can't really say whether your assessment of nonrhythmic, nonharmonic, and nonmelodic is accurate or not. I'm just saying that, particularly as far as rhythm goes, Death Metal holds itself together pretty tightly.
As far as you being unaware of the subculture, this is the internet. Don't talk about things you don't know about. And if you want to talk about such things, look them up with Wikipedia or one of the numerous other informational websites on the internet.
Also, I said Metal, so I wasn't referring specifically death metal (in reference to the Classical Musicians).
