Last year's batch of amv submissions broke down to be 70% CD/DVD and 30% VHS/SVHS, and I have no doubt that the ratio will get more extreme as time goes on.

I've actually had people ask me why we "still bother accepting tape submissions", which is an indicator of how gung-ho people get about the latest technologies.

Kind of annoying because from a practical point of view, handling digital AMV is not nearly as easy as everyone thinks it ought to be (or actually is). There's a much higher rate of fatal errors in digital submissions than in videotape submissions.

In 2001 we had 155 submissions and for 2002 we had 109. I think some casual submitters from 2001 didn't bother for 2002 because the tape-duping policy was reined in a lot -- dups of the contest tape are available only to finalists now instead of all submitters as previously -- because it was taking me literally months to accomplish.

Our planning for the Otakon AMV Contest is based on being able to handle two hundred single submissions without collapsing. But I think if we hit 200 then something's gotta give....

If they were still all tape submissions, then I would say your desk. :)

I remember when you brought all the entry tapes to the panel a couple of years back...

Speaking of which... Did you ever get your VCRs fixed to work make the dups of the 2002 tapes? I don't think I've managed to get mine yet...

I've been bumming dupes off of my friends, so the copies are getting done (slowly). I'm just about at the point money-wise where I can replace my cheap VCRs and do copies myself again.

Anyone know a good place to shop for SVHS VCRs on the web? :-) My local stores have only one SVHS VCR in stock and it doesn't even have a flying erase head.

In other news, got fourteen packages (plus one clueless pre-registration) in the rented mailbox today! Hoody-Hoo!

I'd suggest either onecall (http://www.onecall.com and where I bought my SVHS from) or J&R Music World (http://www.jandr.com and where I bought my DV camera from. They price match.) Both sites have excellent reputations and speedy service.

I mailed my video in today on both CD (MPEG-2) and VHS so it should work on one of the two, so watch for it! And yes, like a smart Otaku, I put a tracking number on it so that the PO can't find a good excuse for losing it =)

Whee. Just finished rendering the final cut of mine. And now to mail it off. You should be expecting a package from me in a few days. Maybe I'll be lucky and win[a copy of the contest] this year. ;)

Well, my submission's in before the deadline. Thanks to USPS Delivery Confirmation, I was able to find out that my package arrived at the arrival point this afternoon. I hope that Matt & everyone else likes my video, it only took a year or so to make...
