I thought that too until an argument in another board proved otherwise.
I said it also because I've seen both. Boogiepop I've seen four times (yes, it DOES just have that much replay value -- you always notice something new).

We showed lain at anime club in the fall; I couldn't help noticing the stylistic similarities (but Boogiepop has better music).
Some people pointed out that we should have shown them back to back.

.Hack Sign - any other what makes a person a person story SEL I guess.
Combine that with a video game, an abusive home life, and a subtle gender twist. The series only lightly mentions the harsher parts of the show since it is viewed from within the video game with only brief clips of reality.

Yu Yu Hakushou - Naruto
YYH like Naruto is along the lines of a slightly more in depth DBZ. Mostly due to the casting of antiheroes some thoughts on right, wrong, and the gray area.

Ghost in the Shell: The Movie - The Matrix
Ghost in the Shell had a great influence on The Matrix and damn near serves as a precursor. It is very philosophical.

It is difficult to know what you are looking for without a reason for showing anime in class. Are trying to make them think about plots and story concepts or maybe a different culture?

Mostly it's entertainment. There are plenty of side benefits, for example; many of my students have a low reading level, by letting them watch something that they enjoy, they learn not only to read (from the subtitles) but also they learn to pick up the speed of their reading and that it can be a 'fun' activity.
Something that most textbooks leave out.

Once they get beyond simple entertainment, I teach them how to make AMV's from dvd source material, which gets them learning all sorts of other esoteric stuff like network navigation, video editing, script writing, file extentions.. the who nine yards. If I *must* I'll buy the disks myself, since for some reason the school is reluctant to let me spend hundreds of dollars on it. This last week for example I just purchased the region2 DVD's for Macross Zero at 5000 Yen each, out of pocket.

None of that works if the students don't have something that they find interesting in the first place.

Anime has some very distinct advantages over some other media types, since it's not only frequently very thought engaging, but well made, and being (of course) animated, free to interpretation through song. I personally get a kick out of seeing students totally engrossed in whatever they are into at the moment, whether it be 'Twin Spica' (an underated show for sure!), Fruits basket, or Naruto. The fact that students are working harder in other classes so that they can come to my class and finish an episode of 'whatever' makes it worth it to me to keep 150-200 gig of anime on site.

Fruits Basket - Full Metal Alchemist

This is purely speculation since I haven't seen either, but most of the girls I know who've gushed over how 'cute and sweet, and pretty and dramatic' Fruits Basket is - are the same girls who die for Full Metal Alchemist - for the exact same reasons, cute and sweet and pretty and dramatic. But I hear FMA has some angst and maybe some action - so it could appeal to the guys as well as the girls. I don't know of any male fans of Fruits Basket, but if the guys in your class like it, they should like FMA more.

Rurouni Kenshin (not the ova, the series)

It has the cute and funny aspects that should sit along the lines of Fruits Basket, with a little romance here and there - no more than you get in Naruto. The action is 'different' enough that it should appeal to those who like the different techniques that make Naruto such an 'alien culture' anime, with a little of the 'boy growing up' theme in Yahiko. I'd say the first two arcs - be sure to stop after the Kyoto Arc if you decide to show this. The christian arc isn't worth watching, imo.

Magic Knight Rayearth

I don't know what Princess Tutu is about, but if you have any sort of audience for 'magical girl shoujo anime' MKR is a good one. The progression is like a role playing game - the characters actually 'build up' to get stronger, something I haven't seen in other anime. It's cute and funny at times, then over to angsty at others. And it has mecha fights, which is rare to find in a shoujo anime without stumbling over exposed breasts and overly buxomed little girls.

I have no idea. I've heard it from way too many fangirls to ignore it. And now that I've seen some screencaps from the anime, I'm guessing it's the main character (the effeminate boy with the braid) they find sweet, and the really funky comedic expressions he makes - that's probably the 'cute' aspect. Almost all the screencaps these fangirls use are either cutsy or pretty, or sappy sweetness of him and his brother.

Still, I've heard Fruits Basket has its own little dose of sappy angst, so I stick with the comparison.

How about an age range or a topic you teach maddbunny?

Anyway FLCL is a good idea as someone else put it.

It requires thought and if you read subtitles you better read fast.

I never really thought of editing as educational before. Not bad.

You could just point them in the direction of manga or books on topics they may actually like.

I was one of the smart kids in school but my reading stunk until I find books I liked. After that reading becomes and addictive way to combat boredom. Lets face it The Red Badge of Courage and Great Expectations in middle school (I guess) aren't exactly riveting when you could just watch a movie. You may want to find modern authors. Sorry off topic.
