I wholeheartedly agree with EC on this one. That's the grading scale I use. Why is a 7 average? Because that's the statistical average of most things in the world. That's just how it works and if you've taken any college-level statistics class you'd know that.EarthCurrent wrote:I use 7 as my average cause that's how I grade things.
7/10=.70=70%=C and a C is an Average Grade.![]()
But I also don't like giving out 9s or 10s.

Well I wouldn't say "really really suck," but rather a 5 is "not good," 3 is "really suck" and 1 is "really really suck" as you stated. Basically, if a 7 is average, that would leave 8, 9 and 10 for good yes? If you think about it...it makes sense since not many things fall under "good" (statistically speaking). By having a 5 average, that's saying that half things are good and half things are bad...or something along those lines. I don't agree and thus only 3 of the scores are under "good" as opposed to 5...wow this makes no sense.Phade wrote:Hey EarthCurrent,
If you say that 7 is an "average" video, then what's the point of values 1-5? Just there to say "you really really really suck"?

Basically for me....6 -7 is average 1 - 5 is "ungood" and 8 - 10 is good (good, great and awesome)...so yeah, I think there are less levels of "good" than "suck" because statistically, that's true.Phade wrote:Hey dwchang,
So what your saying is that there are 6 levels of "suck" (1-6), 1 level of "eeegh, ok" (7), and 3 levels of "good" (8-10), right? Just checking...

Hey,
Phade.
Is that because there more differences between things that suck or just that there are more things that suck? and that suck things should have a wider distirbution than good things? Again, just checking...dwchang wrote:Basically for me....6 -7 is average 1 - 5 is "ungood" and 8 - 10 is good (good, great and awesome)...so yeah, I think there are less levels of "good" than "suck" because statistically, that's true.

Yeah, pretty much. I think that's A LOT harder to make something good compared to bad and thus more scores for it since well...there are so many levels of "bad" or whatever.Phade wrote:Hey,

I hope this all makes sense. I don't wanna force my scoring system on anyone. Everyone should just give what they feel is right. Although, I won't at all deny that there is quite a bit of grade-inflation on the .org.

You do NOT argue with Phade.Phade wrote:Hey,

I'm not too afraid of people complaining "WHY'D I GET A 5!?" when the site itself states that 5 should be the average. You people should NOT bring your "grade school" ideas of scoring here. What we end up with is a higher global average. I'm not saying that's bad (far from it) but as time goes on, we will need that 5 to be average. I think stricter scoring with the average 5 is better because it's a stronger "signal" to the person your opinionating that something should be done. When you say, "this video is kinda average" and give it a 7, that person's mind will think "7's not so bad" when in truth, the average vid around here is actually pretty bad...

I'm with Phade on this one, GOD BLESS DA FIVE AVERAGE!!!

I think I'm actually in the middle of this issue.
I *do* look at the scoring from a 'grade-type' percentage. With 50% being 'failing' but also average - if you have a 5, and half is good half is bad, it means you're not doing it. You have to have more good than bad if you're accomplishing your goal (passing the class, getting a counting grade). If you only have half good and half bad - at an average 5, then you haven't passed. Once you get below the 5 it's even worse, and you can say there's a lot less good things than there are bad, which hurts but happens sometimes.
Above the 5 average (as in the pass/achieve - fail/not there) mark, are the not so many bad things anymore areas. In that case 6 means you have a little more good, and you're moving up, but you're still not at that acceptable 'C' grade yet, you're just barely passing. More improvement is needed. Then you have 7, which would be the C grade - this means not too much farther to go, the good is outweighing the bad, time to tighten things up and move higher. And then 8 would be the highest mark an 'OK' video can get. 9 is nearly perfect, and 10 is unprecedented.
So, I think I'm using the 'school A-F = 10-5' way of looking at things, but I still consider 5 an average to the point where good and bad weigh equally. If that makes any sense.
