what i meant to say was that the commercials are licensed, so it's similar to what you're wondering, except they typically don't waste a lot of money on popular songs, or even semi-popular underground music that is commonly used here.
oh, and it's probably always entirely raw :P

Lets look at this in another light. Even if it were all legal and nice, do you honestly think there would be a paying market for AMV's? You're talking about a niche of a niche, not to mention Anime Companies aren't doing too well financially, why would anyone spearhead AMV's for profit when there is no money to be made in it?

if you go to the movies, see a 1-2 minute kickass freaking awesomely well-made amv to a new anime that's out, isn't that gonna make you want to watch it way more than a typical trailer?
imho i think anime companies would be smart to start implementing AMVs as a way to advertise commercially instead of just ignoring us and reaping the benefits. Not saying they should hire someone off the Org, but probably get the editor they do hire to be more a-m-v.org-ish :P

the music rights would be a non-issue if they get something done themselves like a piece of the soundtrack.

AMV Contests at conventions..
I heard that Hold Me Now sold out the dealer's room of Princess Tutu at the con it was entered to. I've seen similar effects at other cons as well.

I don't like 'dance' AMVs, I don't like dance animes. I prefer fighting or scifi. There is nothing in "Hold Me Now" at all for me.

However - I watch it often, have shown it to....everyone around me. And I plan on buying Princess Tutu as soon as I can.

Quality AMV - what can I say?

But isn't having a small branch of an anime company not the same as an entire company devoted to AMV's, unless the other companies contracted for it...*ponders on the idea* Would be nice to have big name companies contract out editors to make AMV''s that are trailers for the shows they want to promote...

Old Man, didn't ADV try to get the rights to Hold Me Now's music, but it's like Norwegian or something, and they failed?

I'd read that too... I don't know the full story behind it though.

On a similar note:
I know several members of this site were contracted by ADV to do cookies/amvs on the NOIR dvds.... Sukisyo and Green Green have official amvs on their dvds (however they are somewhat painful to watch cause they are pretty boring).
