Are GMVs with gameplay footage acceptable?

Post by Kumatora » Mon Apr 30, 2007 4:59 pm

I'm just wondering. The gameplay footage I have in mind is NOT for a combo video but is part of it.

nope (assuming you want to make a gmv that's all gameplay footage)
game footage is limited to cutscenes/cinematics/fmvs that are "anime inspired" like kingdom hearts and final fantasy

you should be able to have some gameplay footage...but 51% must be a confirmed anime source

However if your video fits the other areas of video game rules here then having gameplay footage amongst your video is perfectly acceptable.

I think metal gear solid is considered anime...I think.
I know I've seen at least 1 on the site
from looking at other threads/just being around for awhile Vlad G Pohnert takes care of the anime database...he would probably know more than most people

What about Smash Brothers and Metroid? To explain Metroid, the next one's supposed to have real time cutscenes.

Video Games

In order for a video game title to be accepted as anime, it must meet the following criteria:

• Games must be made in Japan under the control of a Japanese company.
• Games must be in the style and spirit of anime (not based on North American or other country icons).
• The game may premiere outside of Japan so long as the above criteria is met.

Examples: Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi, Final Fantasy 7, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Resident Evil
So, as you can see above, MGS games are fine (as exampled) as would be Smash Bros. and Metroid -- all of these were created by and under the control of Japanese companies (Konami and Nintendo, respectively) and are in the "style and spirit" of anime.

Even if the game used is made by an American developer (ie Metroid Prime)? I assume seeing as Nintendo would supervise it.

I think you're pretty safe, as long as you keep to cutscenes and not make a full GMV of in-game, hud-laden clips. If anyone has a problem, just say that Samus is a mecha and you're in the clear. The anime influence/spirit rule is there to keep out GMVs using stuff like Halo, Gears of War, Grand Theft Auto, etc.
